Speaking german in Thun area?? Any help?

Hi,

We're thinking of moving to Thun. My girlfriend speaks fluent german, french and english. I speak english and intermediate french.

Are there any german language courses in Thun?

I am wondering if I will be completely out of my depth if i just move there without any german knowledge!

Cheers

Richard

tadaah : Sprachschule Thun

personally, I would go for the Volkshochschule. Have used them as the Inlingua classes I found were very basic for beginners.

was pretty much limited to "zwei bier bitte" & randomly pointing at menus when I got here.

I started with Inlingua, but the study group was v large & also predominantly new arrivals with limited learning potential. Due to my work, I would end up missing a couple of lessons, only to return & find we were still chucking a red ball at each other, intoning "Ich heisse ...", which was depressing.
Signed up for Volkshochschule, where it was pretty much straight into grammar as well as vocab, with a heavy proportion of self study. 3 months well worth it for 600 chf.
Also my then girlfriend (now wife) spoke very leetle Engleesh at the time, we speak German only at home. Suggest you try doing this with your girfriend as much as possible, as she is fluent herself. Practice, practice, practice ...
Now booking 1 on 1 lessons at 40chf a piece for some hard core grammar & have to learn 50 new words a week.

Re: Speaking german in Thun area?? Any help?

Ok yes so pretty much in the same boat as me then. I bought Tell me More! German which is pretty good (i bought the same in French) and covers everything up to general fluency.

However there is nothing like hands on practice.

I emailed Missbehavin' too to ask about Thun. It seems a nice city and we hope to visit soon.

I prefer the look of Thun and Bern to Geneva and Lausanne. Thun seems cheaper to live and is 20mins from Bern. But at the end of the day its if my french girlfriend would consider Thun to be ok to raise kids...when zay would not be french speakeeeng!

Re: Speaking german in Thun area?? Any help?

Just moved to Thun some 4 weeks ago. I am now doing a course with Migroschule in Thun. There are also other courses offered by Inlingua, etc...in town. I am sure you will find one for yourself.

I am also in the Migros schule in Thun. They are pretty chill courses and the beginner is really simple. Only a few weeks in now but it seems to be a good starting point.. I would recommend it to anyone interested. Not too pricey either.. Good luck..

Although I don't live in Thun I can say it is a very nice city, and wonderful place to raise children.

Since Thun is a touristical place I guess you're good with english and french!
