Hello All,

I am Pallavi and have relocated to Switzerland. I am now looking for a job in embedded software development as I have 6 years of professional background in this domain. I learnt that learning german and french is the key here to get a job. So know I have decided to go for german. I don,t find a language school here at vevey which gives quick courses. Please suggest me if its worth taking up private tutions or should I proceed with the online course I am taking up.

Given that you live in Vevey.... Wouldn't it make more sense to learn French? I've got the feeling that most potential employers in the French part of the country couldn't care less how good your German is if you don't speak French.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes it makes sense to learn French but I am open to any position in Switzerland and most of the jobs in embedded software development demands german skills.

learning any language in a professional level (that means having meetings, writing emails, getting agreements, notes..etc) would take years..
But if the aim is only to communicate in basic level, an online course should work for a committed student

Well to actually answer your question:

The Migros Clubschule, is probably one of the best established language schools in Switzerland. They offer various languages, including of course German at all levels in most small (and big) towns - including Vevey.

Not sure how they rate, but maybe others can help.

Yes migros is a good option but unfortunately they ask for basic level of french as the classes are in french. I have enquired about it and was informed that I need to have atleast basics of french. So I decided to go for private tutions. Private tution is turning out be very expensive for me. Then I started browsing about online courses. And now I am all confused as to what I choose..private or online course. Any suggestion for online course?

Do you have to stay in Vevey? Because if you choose to learn German, I would recommend moving to a German speaking part of Switzerland, and then attending a basic German class there, because as stated above, to participate in German classes in Vaud you need to speak French.

If you have money to spend and time to lose, you could join an intensive course in language schools like ESL, but again that would mean moving.

I recently had to train my German for an interview and I use Strokes easy learning software. I bought it in Manor I think but you can find it on amazon.
I thought it was very good, it goes from easy to business level and it helps you work on grammar, vocabulary and also your pronunciation if you plug in a microphone.

Sorry, no advise, but the classes are in french?? To learn German????? How random. I am doing german with migros in solothurn, and the german classes are well....in german. How strange to teach it in french. None of us spoke very good german, but that is the idea ha ha.

Well Vevey is in the French speaking part of Switzerland, so if you attend a german class here all the explanations are in French. Like when you're in a language course in England, the theory is explained in english untill the students have a high enough level to understand everything...

Yeah, I guess so....but if I was learning french in the german part of switzerland, I would expect the lessons to be in french, not in German. I find it a bit bizzare personally! lol.

what level are you at now? finding a tandem partner would be helpful to improve speaking skills. otherwise, reading german news could be a good start.
