help please, what is a Ster? (German)

Hallo,
I would like to buy fireplace wood from a site (German only).
The quantity is expressed in "Ster" ("preis pro Ster"): can you tell me what is a "Ster"? I didn't find it on the dictionary...
thanks!

It's most likely 1 cubic meter of wood...

No problemo..before buying the "ster", I would make sure to ask what the volume of said "ster" is. If you need help with the German, let me know and I can make a quick call for ya...

Re: help please, what is a Ster? (German)

I'd imagine that is for a fireplace. If so, couple of points that may be useful:

- best deals I've found are on Ricardo (I'm in the German part)
- delivery is often available if not explicitly mentioned for a bit extra
- beware the size, and whether you will need the logs cut again (from 1m length to 50cm then 25 again - this often costs a bit extra ('pro schnitt'))
- lastly, try the 'upside down' / 'top burning' / 'whatever name you give to it' technique for fires - I'm a recent convert. This site covers it quite well:

Almost make sure what size cut wood you want. Ie they usually deliver 30cm "logs" so if you have a smaller oven or fireplace and need say 25cm logs then make sure you specify unless you like the extra work :-)

Just realised that someone has already posted you the good advice on specifying log size , so apologies for duplication.

By coincidence we had a Ster delivered today..... here is a picture of most of it (about 30 logs went into the house). These were cut into 33cm lengths for a fireplace. Hope that helps!

Nice picture

Although I am surprised you were "allowed" to stack it like that. When we had a ster delivered a year or so ago, the delivery guy told us to stack it "properly"

(at the ends you criss-cross - so logs go in one direction, immediately above they are turned 90 degrees and so on).

Herr Wyrsch in Adliswil is your man. We paid CHF 170 per Ster.
