Hi,

Can anyone recommend me some german books that a 13 year old boy can read. My brother is in 1st year in secondary school and is learning German and he wants to get some german books that he can start to read in order to improve his german beyond what is been taught in class.

Something interesting and relatively easy for him to start off with.

Is there any series of books that would be of interest to him?

I can't recommend any books personally, but when I started learning German (also at 13 years of age), I too wanted to do something extra in my own time - as the pace in school can be rather slow, so I can relate to how he feels.

I found the Deutsche Welle website to be useful. It has plenty of fun learning resources - for a variety of levels (online lessons and games etc): http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,,2547,00.html

It's hard to suggest reading to someone you don't know anything about. What does he like? What are his aspirations?

Why not read his favorite books again in German?

Or check the reading requirements of his school (any language) and read those books in German? Might give him a head start.

I liked reading "Die drei ???". I was younger at the time than your brother but since he wants to start with something easy he could give it a try.

You could search on eurobooks.co.uk for German "graded readers" - they categorise according to age. These include books even at A1 level.

Otherwise, maybe you could subscribe to a German magazine, if he has a strong interest in sport, computers or something? Or there is jetzt.de - a magazine for young German learners.

oops, sorry, I mean the Goethe Institut have select articles from jetzt.de for German learners (intermediate+ level).
