Last time I checked, Zurich was neither particularly close to Basel, not part of Germany...

I have been told that there are classes in LOrrach - but have not yet been able to track them down....... I would also go to them, if once a week and if cheaper than the high Basel prices.

What do you consider as expensive? I go to the Volkhochschule in Basel itself and always thought the prices were really reasonable (current course cost 450 Chf for a semester of lessons, 1.5 hours a week) but perhaps you checked this out already?

That is expensive . But also, I thought the Volkhochschile only had German lessons that were twice a week. Is there also one that is only once a week? Evening, or daytime?

Is it expensive? It is for a semester, so 6 months.

This course is once a week, Werkstatt Deutsch, and is for level B2 (or having done level B1 at least). Evenings. Level C also has once a week classes, also evenings.

Otherwise they have more intensive courses that are twice a week (also evenings!) for all levels.

The majority of their offering is evenings as it is essentially designed to be a "nightschool" for those who are in work during the day. I have been at the Volkhochschule for over 5 years and have done both German and French there. The quality of the tutors has always been most impressive - only one not so good tutor out of about 12 so far.

thanks for the update info ECB. I have enrolled there before - once, several years ago - dreadful tutor! And again last year, despite the cost. Great tutor, but I just don't have the time to go to lessons twice a week and keep up with the homework in between. (not prepared to give up my evening sports training) So, I am still looking for somewhere that is just once a week - and preferably cheaper. That is why I have been hoping to find somewhere over the border. :-)

The one bad tutor I had was also several years ago (maybe 4). He never prepared anything in advance and a few times even turned up half cut ..
