German Practice

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any group that gets together to practice their German. I am just about to finish an intensiv course and want to find people to practice with.

Cheers,
John

Re: German Practice

Hi, JPH
Just come to our Expats gatherings. You can be sure to find High German speakers, there, as well as others who want to practice their German. Swiss German might be rarer.
See you there

Re: German Practice

if I will not be an intrusion, is it okay to join the secret club of Expat gathering? I need to practice my conversation skills in german but hard to do with swiss colleagues. We always revert back to english because I only have very limited German. A bit annoying since I want to learn the language.

Re: German Practice

I would be interested as well. Was thinking about starting a thread myself last night.
Mein deutsch ist nicht so gut, aber Ich muss mehr sprechen!

(is that right?) lol

I'd love to be able to meet up with some fellow *learners* and try to have some convos. in HG. as well.

(I am nowhere near intensive level though, I hope this wouldn't be a prob)

Re: German Practice

Maybe, we should have a new forum to practice our german in beginner, intermediate and advance level so we have a chance to use what we know or we don't know.

I wonder how dumb JFK felt when he realized he called himself a jelly donut?

one of the most memorable speeches by possibly the most effective leader the US has ever seen?

I'm sure he had worse days - like in Dallas

Re: German Practice

I sure hope we can get a few peeps together to do this.
I know I'd benefit greatly from it, as well as getting to know some other people.

I always get so damned nervous...so I think it would be nice to be surrounded by other people in the same position.

Re: German Practice

I remember that feeling and still have it, I have the wondeful option of being able to practise on children who dont care if you use "dem " instead of "den" or pronounce something incorrectly.

Re: German Practice

seriously though...can't it all just be THE and A/AN !!!!!

*growls*

hahah. well, let's hope we can get some people together and meet up. We'll go somewhere and let the swiss people laugh at us as we all gather 'round a table and try to speak.
should make for an interesting night.

Re: German Practice

Hi, Norvan and all
With "Expat gatherings", I just meant all the frequent get-togethers of Expats posted on the Englishforum and elsewhere, such as the semi-regular drinks and all the other events. As the responses to the post have shown, there will always be others who also wish to practice German, just use the opportunity and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
See you there
Idgie

Re: German Practice

I'd like to have a meeting where the purpose is to practice speaking.
not in a bar setting either so to speak, a cafe maybe....

Something apart from the semi drink meetings, something entirely on it's own with the purpose for practicing/learning german.
(I won't be missing the semi drink nights though)

is anyone else really interested in meeting somewhere now and then to do this?

Bueller? Bueller?

Re: German Practice

cool. since I have never been to the gatherings, I am not sure exactly who among, except for Jen and katie, from the expats are willing to unleash their newly found power . Just point me to the table where people mixes their english and german words together with their drinks.

me!! me!! pick me!

I think I have read enough books, attended too many schools and paid enough money so I would like to know if my German knowledge is really working.

Re: German Practice

that's how I feel. I took 2 courses but then they got too $$$$$, I have a BOATLOAD of books/tapes/cds at home as well as sites and sites bookmarked on my PC, I've created my own binder with printing pages off the net...I'm actually overwhelmed and teaching myself in a really choppy manner. Which I feel isn't really working.
I know alot more words than I think, but when it comes to properly forming them into full-on sentences, I freeze like a deer in headlights

I have to buckle down and get a SYSTEM to my madness, I feel like a dog chasing its tail somedays.
TOO MUCH INFO. CANNOT COMPUTE!

(pm me, maybe we can set something up..I'm right in Zurich)
