The fifth Swiss language?

hi there

Regarding this article...

How common is Jenish/Yenish? I've heard vague rumours that it's spoken around Chur. Is it as common as Romansch?

cheers

Re: The fifth Swiss language?

thanks for that, never heard of them, but heres a very interesting article : Swiss Gypsies

heres some more here ... Eugenics in Switzerland, no wonder I'd never heard ...

Quote:
The Oeuvre’s founder and director, Alfred Siegfried (1890-1972), terrorised Traveller children. The Yenish likened him to Hitler. He hunted down Gypsies with the unfailing assistance of the police and the authorities. Bent on "eradicating the evil of nomadism at its source, i.e. the children, by systematic educative measures," he had a pathological hatred of Travellers, whom he referred to as mentally retarded psychopaths.

Re: The fifth Swiss language?

The Beobachter magazine did a very good job and Pro Juventute should've been dissolved because of this scandal. The official Switzerland should've never allowed this program nor given the competences to Pro Juventute.

About 30'000 Jenish people live in the country, only a couple thousand are still traditionally vagrant. Romansh on the other hand is spoken by about 50'000 Swiss.

Re: The fifth Swiss language?

A wiki link about the Swiss Yenish ( White Gypsy )

Quote:
In Germany, Switzerland, France and Austria there exist so-called white Gypsies who are known under the names of Jenische (German), [Yéniche] fr:Yéniche (French), and Yenish or Yeniche (English). Their language seems to be grammatically identical with other (Swiss) German dialects; the origin of the lexicon, however, incorporates German, Romani, Yiddish and other words.

Good to have it bumped in the light of a recent thread on Romas etc. ( besides I was recently in touch with a Society here in CH that explained a little about it ).
