One of my favourites, too. Especially since it reminds me of a girl of the same name whom I knew (not in the Biblical sense) a while ago ...

Re: Unfortunate brand names

You lot are cheating! I said unfortunate brand names in Switzerland ... certainly not place names!

But since they're all hilarious, here's one I saw on my last skiing holiday, in Laax. (Apparently "crap" is Rumantsch for stone.)

Maybe he liked the song by Dawn in the 70s - Oh Candida - we could make it together…….etc.
Big hit at the time.

I remember there being a lot of Kayleighs after the hit in the 80s

A friend of my mum's had a daughter back in the Uk called Amora Castrata.

She apperaed fully unaware why people might, um, raise eyebrows when hearing that.

Because he speaks Latin and knows what it means. I do like the fact he dared to reach out to the original etymology, really.

I have a problem brushing my teeth with Candida, flossing as well, yuck. Unfortunately, it's the only Swiss producer of a cinnamon tooth paste.

I try hard to not read new user names in my mother tongue, we have had a "bunch of farts" showing up recently

I covered weird names in a class a few weeks ago, who the hell names their kid Google? What's wrong with people..Apparently, the name Prune is getting popular in France, it's a bit strange, too.

Anyways, back to CH and their creativity.

We had this Candida thing already years ago. Candidus is latin for white; Candida is the feminine form. One of it's earliest documented occurences was a woman named Candida who allegedly was healed by St. Peter, in other words a long time before a funny chap felt the urge to name a genus of yeasts after their color, Candida.

This was deemed unfortunate for the Swiss market because of the association with cat food but, somehow, they seem to have got away with it. . .

Hasn't Microsoft got a product called Wix?

I wonder how many German speakers smurk over that one?

In Spain they sell a brand of bread rolls called bimbo.

In italy there is an electricity company called powergenitalia

I kid you not.
Ah, pan Bimbo!!

It appears that Grupo Bimbo is a Mexican baking company. They came up with the name in 1945 mixing the words bingo and Bambi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grupo_Bimbo

Sorry, not funny. Amogles just piqued my curiosity.

Carry on
