I had a university student years ago who was thrilled that after her summer of intensive German she could FINALLY understand her grandmother, who spoke only Yiddish. Two birds, one stone

It's true, good knowledge of German language will take you there, but the same cannot be said about Swiss German...

You can probably understand more of Yiddish if you look at a good cross section of different regional German dialects than if you concentrate only on High German.

Swiss German on the other hand might help you understand the Amish. Better still is if you know both Swiss German and Bavarian Frankish.
