[English] about next/last + weekday/month

This is a question that I am always confused. I'm not a native English speaker, I think it makes sense to make it clear here.

So now we are Tuesday, 05/05/2015.

- What day is "next Friday"? For me "next Friday" means "Friday next week" (in 10 days), and not the coming Friday this week (in 3 days).
- What day is "last Monday"? For me "last Monday" means "Monday last week", so it is 8 days ago, and not the just passed Monday this week (yesterday).

AM I RIGHT?

Then comes the month.

- Which months is "next August"? For me "next August" means "the August to come", so August 2015, and not "August next year" (August 2016).
- Similar for "last Feb". For me it means Feb 2015, and not Feb 2014.

But then I realize that my interpretations of "next" and "last" for weekday and month are not consistent.

What is in the standard English?

at least in the US, it varies wildly depending upon where you are from. for example, "next Friday" for me means this coming Friday, whereas "next Friday" for my wife (who comes from a different part of the country) means "the Friday after this coming Friday". and, just to confuse matters even more, "last Monday" would be yesterday to both of us.

Re: [English] about next/last + weekday/month

There isn't really a standard. Unlike Other languages we are not always so specific and our language has many more exceptions than rules!

Thinking forward, everything in the same week is just see you on Thursday/ Friday/ at the weekend for example. We use next for days when we are talking about the next week. 2 weeks ahead would be week after next, Friday after next etc.

Thinking backwards, we use yesterday, day before yesterday and then last for all days that have been before that. If you are talking about a full week before we could say the week before last, Friday before last etc.

What you said for the months is generally correct. Also If we want to talk about months in the previous year we could say " August last year" and if about the following year we could say "August next year" .

You'll find though some people have a different understanding of what is when. Sounds like you have a pretty good grasp of English anyway. Hope that helps and good luck!

Re: [English] about next/last + weekday/month

I think you're right in your usage even if it seems confusing to you. "Next Friday" would mean the Friday of next week and not this week's one. If I were talking about it I would say "this Friday" or "this coming Friday" to mean the Friday this week.

"Last Monday" would be the Monday last week as I would say "yesterday" for this week's Monday.

The months are as you suggest, i.e. last February is the 2015 one and next August is also the 2015.

It may also depend on which English you're using (English/American English) and who you're talking to. For example being British rather than saying next Friday I could also say "Friday week" which would indicate to other Brits that I mean the Friday a week after the one coming up. And a "fortnight Friday" means two weeks after the one coming up. Americans don't usually use these phrases.

Don't get too fixated on "next" though. For example rather than saying "next August" I'd be more inclined to simply say "in August", i.e. I made an appointment to see a specialist in August. The inference is that I mean August this year. Or instead of saying "I'm planning to go on holiday next September", I say "I'm planning to go on holiday in September".

Re: [English] about next/last + weekday/month

For the days I completely agree with your interpretation as this is what I would use.

For the months however I use 'this' for months in the current year ( irrespective of if it's in the past or the future) and 'last' or 'next' for the previous or following years.

For example I would say 'this February' for February 2015 and 'last February' for February 2014 and 'next February' for February 2016.
The same would apply for August so 'this August' would be August 2015 and next August would be 2016.
