Semaine Verte - what does it mean

Rang up a new doctor and got the answer phone telling me that "we are available to take your calls Mon to Weds and Fridays 10 to 12pm and Thursdays "en semaines vertes" from 2pm to 4pm"

What on earth is a semaine verte in this sense? The doctor is a hospital based doctor so perhaps it refers to weeks when she's not operating?? Really lost here .. and my (Swiss) neighbour doesn't know either ..

In any event, she's not in - so this week is not a semaine verte ..

Re: Semaine Verte - what does it mean

Are you sure it said semaine verte and not semaine ouverte?

Otherwise I have no idea. Maybe the hospital has a colour coding for different weeks. Odd weeks are green and even weeks are red for example. Have you tried looking on the hospital website to see if there's an explanation there?

Re: Semaine Verte - what does it mean

The sound quality wasn't great but my OH listened and so did my neighbour and they both said it was "semaine verte". Semaine ouverte sounds more likely but then why would the main cantonal hospital not be open?

I sing with this lady so I will just have to ask her what on earth is on her answer machine next Monday.

Re: Semaine Verte - what does it mean

Hi ,
Unless it was the sound of the machine making the words sound funny then . . .
Semaine Verte translates directly to 'week green'
From French - and here un Switzerland is a week dedicated to doing something outside in the Nature.
Like 'white week' is for skiing. This coincides with the fact that my daughters school has Waldwoche - they are out&about in the local forests.
What seems odd is that the message was in English then this Semaine Verte (??)
Or have I misunderstood this.
Hope this helps
Arwen

Re: Semaine Verte - what does it mean

Forgot to add - so possibly this Doctor has no appoinments in this week. The hospital will surely be open but this Doctor not there.

Re: Semaine Verte - what does it mean

My two cents worth ...

Agree with Begianmum that it is most probably ouvertes, as in "open for appointments on Thursdays". A strained construction, but hospitals have their own language

Re: Semaine Verte - what does it mean

Just listened again - if it is semaines ouvertes shouldn't it be "ouvrables"? But in any event there is no doubt in my mind it is "semaines vertes". Plus OH and neighbour are French/Swiss so even they are confused ..

By the way the message was in French nad I was just translating it here as we are required to ...

Will let you know Tuesday after choir!!

Re: Semaine Verte - what does it mean

In a school context, semaine verte is the equivalent of field trip, where the kids do activities outside, typically toward the end of the school year.

But in a medical practice, that sounds weird!
