where can i learn high german only :)

Hi
Suppose I am in Switzerland on a job and I have spare time in the evenings
when I could learn German.. Where could I learn high german only
meaning spoken, reading, writing etc - instead of swiss german - if say I
want to find it easier for me to get a job in Germany that would require me
to know at least B1 or B2 level of the language ?
Thank you,
D

Re: where can i learn high german only :)

I would forget language schools unless you want to learn at a snails pace and pay way over the odds. There are pubs in Zurich where the English hang out, I'm sure the same exist for the Germans but I don't know where.

I would try to find out which bars/restaurants are frequented by Germans and start hanging out there and then try to find some friendly people.

I'm going to german classes in Alphasprachstudio near Bahnhof Stadelhofen it's a really good school, high level and all in high german. I would say when you apply for a job where they require german it's good to have minimum the B1 official certificate.. it gives you points..

Re: where can i learn high german only :)

Thanks for the informative responses from everyone.
I really appreciate it.

I guess it's safe and ok for me to study at a proper school and expect to be
taught high german.

Susanne, thank you but I'd rather go for a school where I can get an official
certificate so that I can use that to to apply for jobs.

Re: where can i learn high german only :)

If you want to get away from the Swiss/German integrated into most language courses here it might be worth while to study privately. I quite like this website/program and like to partner up with a couple of study partners at my same level to help keep me on track.

good luck with your studies

don't worry about High German in language schools, you would actually struggle to find a school where Swiss-German is taught

Wait, you misunderstood.

You don't get a certificate from a school just for attending a course. You get the certificates if you pass the exams (Goethe / TELC etc.), which you can take at numerous places in CH and DE whether or not you've done a course at the same place. So preparing for the exam and taking the exam are two independent things.

The question, therefore, is how best to learn enough German to be ready to pass the exams. I've tried both classes and individual study and I personally don't think classes suit me well as I've never made any progress. Individual study and/or working with an individual teacher work best for many people, and when they feel ready for the exam they book to attend one somewhere.

I can only speak about Migrosschule since that's where I went. Although the course was taught in High German, we were given what I'd call a "Swissified" version. We learned many words that are commonly used in Switzerland, even if they are not proper HG. For example, in CH you would say Ferien for vacation - not Urlaub. The school does teach you the HG word of course, but that is quickly forgotten once you start using the language here. I get funny looks in Germany when I speak a mish-mosh of HG and SG, particularly when I use grüessech to say hello and merci to say thanks.

This is a good point. I received a letter stating I'd attended X number of classes at the Migrosschule and what level it was. There was no exam, and no mention of how well I performed in the course. The letter is not a certificate. Some employers might accept such a letter, but not necessarily all.

If you're considering long-term residence or even naturalization down the road, I recommend getting a certificate from one of the places mentioned by Pachyderm. Some Kantons restrict the organizations from which they will accept a certificate for purposes of C-permit or naturalization. May as well get it from one of the preferred vendors instead of wasting your time on a certificate that may or may not be accepted.

All that said, you can go to pretty much any school you choose and then take the certificate exams separately with another company.

Re: where can i learn high german only :)

every German course you find will teach you standard German. the only difference between the standard German taught by some courses in Switzerland and what you might learn in Germany relates to vocabulary (as 3Wishes highlighted above) and pronunciation, and in many cases that vocabulary and pronunciation varies within the country of Germany anyway. and don't worry, regardless of how you learn the pronunciation part a native German speaker will always be able to hear your mother language accent.

Re: where can i learn high german only :)

LSI at Kreuzplatz is really good - http://www.lsizh.ch/. They teach high German and I always had German teachers.

I would recommend a school over a bar or conversation group. You notice the difference and it comes together easier when you know why and how you should be saying things. Conversation groups and pubs are good once you can speak a bit and need some practice.

Happy learning

Re: where can i learn high german only :)

While High German may be considered a standardized language, word usage can vary by region. For some fun, you might wish to look at "Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache".

For example, the German word for dialect can be Mundart, Dialekt or Platt:

http://www.atlas-alltagssprache.de/runde-1/f20/

An orange can be called Orange or Apfelsine, again depending on the region:
