Allen Key

What's the (Swiss) German for Allen key? Leo gives me several options (Inbusschlüssel, Innensechskantschlüssel etc), though that would always default to German usage. Is there a more commonly used term in Switzerland?
Cheers

Re: Allen Key

Stiftschlüssel

Sometimes with Sechskant- in front but I think that's redundant.

I always call them Sechskantschlüssel, but I might be wrong...

Coop call them Imbusschlüssel

Just asked my colleagues and they're unanimous in calling it an Imbusschlüssel.

What's actually written on the set I've got in front of me is "Sechskant-Schraubendreher"

Re: Allen Key

Inbusschlüssel, often pronounced Imbusschlüssel.

It is, like Torx, a trade mark in Germany (But not Switzerland), That's why the generic term Innensechskant is mostly used in sales and advertisement.

Inbus == „Innensechskantschraube Bauer und Schaurte“.

Re: Allen Key

Most of the ppl in east Europe call Alankey-Inbus. So Inbusschlussel I will go with that name.

Re: Allen Key

Gotta love Swiss german

You can also use "Haben Sie ein Werkzeug für dass" and wave around the appropriate bolt, which is how I got "Ja, du brauchst eine Stiftschlüssel" from the bloke in Hornbach

Flashcard now updated to the more popular "Imbussschlüssel", but can't help thinking it sounds like the key to a kebab shop.

Re: Allen Key

Inbus is the correct term, but I (SG) came to know them as Imbus. Google Trends says Imbus is almost exclusively used in Switzerland .

Re: Allen Key

Yep - Inbusschlussel ...... they come free with an Ikea flat pack.

You can also buy a screw driver bit set, if you only need the end to fit and not the right-angle.

Somewhere here I found a good translation chart for all things mechanical, I think it was a thread about mountain biking by Eire circa 2006. Worth finding and reposting if someone has time.

Re: Allen Key

Allen keys (= Allen wrenches) and Inbus / Innensechskantschlüssel look and work the same, but beware; they may not have exactly the same dimensions.

Allen being a US company, the original Allen keys are strictly "imperial," while Inbus and every other similar brand in Europe is strictly metric. The differences may be minimal, but with the forces that can be exerted due to the substantial leverage of the key, you may very quickly strip a bolt head if you aren't using the correct system. Been there, done that.
