Re: Intensive German course, visa?! (Basel)

No reputable school will allow you to get a entry visa after the application if you're a non-EU national, a student permit even less so. You're supposed to apply for the visa and IF the permit is approved then the visa will be granted.

What exactly are you here for because I see you're also talking about getting a dog. Do you even know what the Swiss rules of dog ownership are? You need to do your research before you even think of getting a pet, especially if your status here is not 100% solid.

Dear forum legend
While I appreciate the quick reply, I do not find the judgmental tone very pleasant. I am merely seeking information regarding my new, challenging chapter in Basel. You may have forgotten what that's like. Not legendary.

Oh la la, I'm getting out the popcorn. Newbie, Medea is a legend for a reason. She answers all of the questions on EF regarding permits 100% accurately, 100% of the time. If she doesn't know the answer, she will say so.

You, in your infinite Newbie wisdom, may not like her answer, but that does not give you the wherewithal to attack her when she was just trying to help.

If you would like a more accurate response, you must be more specific. Are you EU or non-EU? Your original post was not clear.

Ok, take 2.
An EU passport holder, looking for a recommended, fairly priced, intensive German class in Basel. I'm hoping to use the admissions confirmation to apply for a student's residence permit. if anyone's got tips, i'd be happy to hear.
Thanks

As an EU national you are entitled to live in Switzerland, as a student, worker, or Lady who lunches.... as long as you can prove you can support yourself.

So you need to show a work contract if you have a job, or savings if you are a student or not working. You do not need anything from the language school, that will not help your permit application as an EU citizen.

Re: Intensive German course, visa?! (Basel)

That's great, thanks for the info. It shouldn't be a problem, as an EU national it's not difficult to get a permit so long as you can also show you can support yourself financially while you study.

As far as getting a dog though, I would suggest holding off on that for a while at least. Give yourself time to get settled in properly and then you need to do the following:

Check with your landlord/property agency that it's okay to have a dog, many places don't allow pets. They may ask you to take out additional "doggie damage" insurance as part of your personal liability insurance cover.

Then do the theory part of the mandatory SKN course. You can do it online if you wish in English here:

http://sachkundenachweis-hundehalter...og-owners.html

No reputable refuge or breeder will allow you to have one of their charges until you've done that part. After you get your dog you'll need to get it registered with a vet so it's details can be entered into the ANIS database. You'll also have to register it with your commune/gemeinde and there may be an annual dog licence fee you'll have to pay. While you're there ask them for details of what the cantonal and commune/gemeinde dog regulations are as these vary from place to place. Within a year of getting your dog you'll need to do the practical part of the SKN course with an approved trainer.
