Re: Language resources on the web/net

In my university there is a Language Voluntariate (http://www.upf.edu/vl/english/), maybe it's not very useful but there are conversation guides: Spanish - Catalan, French - Catalan, Portuguese - Catalan and German - Catalan.
There is also an online Catalan course (http://www.intercat.gencat.es) with an English - Catalan guide inside.

I know it's not about German / English but as the thread says "language resources on the web /net" :-)

The Genitiv case expresses possession and very often replaces the word "of." For example: angesichts +G. Angesichts = "in view" and followed with a Genitiv express the phrase "in view of." There are a lot of prepositions that work (are supposed to only function) with Genitiv, such as angesichts, statt, trotz, and aufgrund. Beyond that, it expresses possession as I wrote before, such as with "die Entwicklung des Landes" - the development of the country or "Seans Spielzeug" - Sean's toy. I hope this helps a bit?

"Jocks away" can be used to mean "Up with the Scots!" or "Down with the Scots!" -depending who's shouting it. Alternatively, jocks are men's underpants; and if you are wearing a kilt, are not required. So, "jocks away!".

The expression is "Chocks away!" Meaning 'remove the chocks of wood that are holding the aeroplane back' and was shouted at the ground crew when the pilot was ready to takeoff. Not used much these days.

Jock in an endearment for an inhabitant of Scotland. Still used by those who don't mind a black eye.

Where on earth did you read that pish?

AbFab is indeed correct, it is an archaic aircraft handling term.
Chocks are still used though - you don't park an aircraft with it's brakes on.

About the only use of Jock I've heard for a long time is "Jock Pie", shorthand for this Scottish delicacy

Or, in the US, it is used for those who love sports.

Re: Language resources on the web/net

Until Verena replies we won't know whether she really meant "chocks " or "jocks". You probably didn't see an English newspaper on the relevant weekend when the discussion came up about the projected separation of Scotland from England. At least two papers had the headlines "JOCKS AWAY"! This has nothing to do with aircraft, stationary or otherwise. As regards the underpants; ask any Aussie! Pity there isn't a smilie icon to express "tongue in cheek ".

The headline was a pun - like "Paddy Pantsdown".

Paddy pants down sounds good too! Though I'm not to keen on padding.
