Just keep in mind what I told you about the US tax side of things. If possible don't have joint accounts, keep everything separate money-wise. Otherwise those joint accounts will have to be reported on an FBAR form.

And as you're currently based in the US make it clear on your CV that you hold UK nationality. Otherwise your application could be rejected out of hand if they assume you're American from your address.
They are both US citizens so there is no need for them to keep accounts separate .

That's correct. For now, at least, our current bank deals with people living overseas all the time so we're hoping to be able to get by with them until we can find a bank that will deal with us.

As for the taxes issue, until that is fixed, it looks like under a certain amount we have to report but we won't actually owe any tax. Over that amount gets irritating though.

The thought of giving up citizenship has crossed my mind but at the same time all of BakerGrl's family and half of mine are in the US.

Re: Now or Later

Well, you're not barred from going back there as an EU national you know, despite Mr. Reed's attempts to stop renunciants from entering the US. You'd just need to fill in an ESTA when travelling and have a copy of your CLN with you.

It really depends on where you see your long term future though. Like you my relations are half in the US and half in the UK, but I'd been out of America for so long that when FATCA started appearing and I actually thought about it I realised that I wasn't that American any more. My views and outlook in general were UK ones, not US ones. Of course I was sad to give it up and it will always be "home" to a certain extent because that's where I was born and spent my early years. But I also know that I no longer fit with America.

Ha, ha, you're not alone there. I'm still here and I feel I don't fit anymore .

Hang in there, the US will be completely different under Trump.

Yeah, but do we really want to experience that if we don't have to!

Well I expect at the very least I'll be required to stay in Trump hotels when I travel for government work so there's something.
