I have looked at the links for the Tandem program and although free, not what I want. Really, I would rather spend my time learning enough French to get around than teaching someone english.

Where would I look for a tutor for French? What price range should I expect to pay per hour?

I live in the US so, obviously, can't help you in person. However, I suggest you try working on your own at your own pace with Yabla. It's the company I work for, a full immersion programme, with subtitled videos and lessons to help you learn. All for a modest sum of 10 US dollars a month. I can help you online, if you like. I am French, and taught for years, but have switched to translation work.

I live about 54 mins from Lausanne, but I could do intensive days, with accommodation and meals (or separate kitchen provided). PM for details. Fully qualified, 30+ experience, native French speaker.
