How much should I pay for a private language lesson

No idea about the wage range for a one-on-one private language lesson in Zurich.

Normally, how much should I pay for such a lesson?

Thank you.

If you have the teacher come to you - home or office - you should expect to pay between CHF80 - 120/hour...

I'd say it depends on the teacher and the content of the lesson: if he/she isn't a professional teacher (eg. student, or just native speaker) :about 40-60 CHF. Same price if she/he comes only for conversation.

Good luck!

I agree with FMX, also depends on the pupil and their level.

Many 'teachers' are just filling in, in between other jobs.
Some adverts I've seen for language teaching positions say no need to speak the local language.

If that's okay with you (that they can't speak English or your mother tongue) then fine, but it's up to you to stiplulate..

I'd recommend (especially if you are paying) that you clearly specify what you want / expect and that the first lesson is a trial.
Or get a recommendation from someone of a really good instructor.

Re: How much should I pay for a private language lesson

I agree with AbFAb, my mum who is a qualified teacher charges around that rate, whereas I charge around CHF 65.- due to having some experience, being native in the languages I teach and putting some effort into lesson preparation such as bringing material and so on but not actually having a bit of paper or training as such.

If you want your work or suchlike to cover the cost of your courses, you have to employ someone who is officially affiliated with a "proper language school" so if you have that option, be sure to check it out.

Re: How much should I pay for a private language lesson

I'm in Ticino and I pay 50 CHF per hour. It was 70 for my son and I together. To avoid getting bored, we meet in a nice cafe or small restaurant and also try to practise real life situations. I find this much more enjoyable than a classroom setting.

Re: How much should I pay for a private language lesson

Here in Lugano, I pay fr.50 for an hour of one-on-one conversation with a qualified teacher at her home and fr.65 for an hour of private instruction (grammar, reading etc) in a classroom environment.

Semi-private with one or two others is also a great option because it brings the cost down plus it's nice to have interaction with others.

Often if you ask at one of the language schools in your area about semi-private lessons (ie no more than 4 students), you find that they have other people looking for the same thing and can bring you together at a time that suits everyone.

Migros are around CHF 80 per hour where I live for one on one lessons. Some places will give you a small discount if you book a three month series.

Re: How much should I pay for a private language lesson

As I recall, I paid around 75 CHF an hour for private lessons. My teacher also worked as a professional German-English translator.
