Beginners' Japanese at Migrosklub, Zürich Wengihof-Kalkbreite

Hi all, 2 friends and myself want to learn japanese and have signed up for a probelektion at the Migrosklub in Engelstr. 8004 Zürich. Unfortunately, we're the only ones registered as of now, and the class needs at least 5 to begin. so we're 2 short.

if there's anyone who's thinking of learning jap, lives in/around Zürich, is interested to join us, do let me know! we're all nice folks, really!

Man I would love to learn Japanese, but not too keen on the teaching in German, as I'm still in the A1 stage of that and struggle at best...

I hope you will be able to fill your tempura-bento with sufficient shrimps, Mr Hsiang. As every osechi connoisseur knows, content, presentation, but also number of ingredients are important.

Please keep us informed of your progress and tell us if your sensei meets your expectations.

I think you will be sorely disappointed if you expect to learn this type of culinary art in your class. I advise you to check the Migros brochure again, more carefully.

Re: Beginners' Japanese at Migrosklub, Zürich Wengihof-Kalkbreite

Hi folks,

just want to report back on the jap course I'm doing right now. the classmates are nice, folks who are keen to learn about other cultures. The teacher is a native japanese and the class is taught in traditional jap way, class stands up and greets the teacher at the beginning of the lesson, thanks her at the end and there's a class leader that collects/distributes homework. traditional jap way for 7-yr olds :P but fun teacher in any case.

there's just 1 minor issue.

japanese comprises of 3 different scripts, namely hiragana, katakana and kanji. at least for the 1st 2 semesters (4 months each) only hiragana is taught. only after hiragana is mastered, can the 2 other 2 scripts be taught. In asia (China, HK, Taiwan, Singapore etc) all 3 scripts are taught at the same time, since chinese speakers (asian or non-asan) already know Kanji.

The issue presents itself when the student is mobile and wishes to keep up with his/her classes. so if I go to say Beijing next year, i would probably be placed in a class lower than what I was before moving. vice versa, someone learning japanese in Singapore might be placed in a higher level class when moved here.

that said, minor adjustments can be made by picking up kanji when one can, may be a bit more work, but probably worth it

Re: Beginners' Japanese at Migrosklub, Zürich Wengihof-Kalkbreite

It seems the teaching you are receiving is closely based on that given to Japanese schoolchildren, Mr Hsiang. I would not have expected as much from Migros Klubschule. Consider yourself fortunate. Despite the criticism that is sometimes levelled at the Japanese education system, it is effective and inculcates the proper virtues and moral values in its pupils. You should not rush through things. It is important that you master hiraganas and learn how to perform "kiritsu-rei-chakuseki" to perfection first before moving on to katakana and kanji. Besides, it is my understanding that simplified Chinese is used in Singapore and not the traditional script on which kanji is based, so while you may be better off than your Swiss Kommilitonen, you should not consider that learning the jouyoukanjis and their pronunciation will just be a walkover.

Trust and respect your sensei and you will eventually become an 一人前の男 (ichininmae no otoko). As the Japanese say, 石の上にも三年 (ishi no ue ni mo sannen) = one has to sit on a rock for three years, to which I would personally add "at least".

Lusty sensei, indeed i was schooled in simplified chinese, but the 2 scripts are not mutually exclusive, and we've also been exposed to traditional script in non-academic media. Nevertheless, you are right, while i have spent years reading chinese comics written in traditional, i should not underestimate kanji and its pronunciation. i intend to put every effort into learning it, so i can better understand my hentai manga.

I detect an undercurrent of japanese buddhism in your message to me. Perhaps you've cleverly inserted a koan for me to meditate on: what becomes a man who sits on a rock? i will not rest until the rock and i achieve oneness...
