To supplement my german I would like to watch fims in german with german subs. Best would be german popular cultural films. Is there a way to grab the films from somewhere with the subs ect ? I tried previously messing with srt files but always had syncing issues.

Appreciate any pointers EFers..

Re: German films with subs

Try your local library.

However, I must say made-in-Germany films on DVD don't usually carry English subtitles but Swiss ones usually do. I've enjoyed about a dozen Swiss-German films. Love their way of telling a story; Swiss filmmakers look at themselves humorously, too.

P.S. It's funny that Swiss-German films also provide German subtitles (guess most Germans find it hard to understand, eh?).

No, that's having one too many logos. Such as in the background of a football player being interviewed by TV journalists post-match.

Now stop baiting me. I've gotta go eat lunch.

i did have problems looking for german films with eng subs, i guess its understandable since we're in the german speakign region of europe. For watching films, i use VLC, never had problems with subtitle syncing.

i did a quick search, did not find a german film thread. are you looking for a place where u can find german film DVDs with eng subs or german films in general as well?

Re: German films with subs

i'd like to recommend Goodbye Lenin and Kebab Konnektion. However, Vollidiot is, IMHO, everything that is wrong with german entertainment.

another tip for improving german-head over to the German Music thread, we got some good recommendations going on there.

Das Boot was the first film I had problems with syncing up the subs ! I do use vlc player... Probably just bad subs. At the moment hearing and seeing the subs all in german really helps me. I will persevere....

Thanks for all the tips.

Re: German films with subs

Up to date films go to the trouble of re-writing the script so that the subtitles do not correspond word for word with the spoken script. They say "oh gosh!" and subtitles read "oh golly"...
Copyright issue to protect them being used and abused to teach English I suppose.
Maybe the same rule applies to downloading German language option with German subtitles?

Re: German films with subs

There are some excellent German films out there. I find that if they have English subtitles, then I would not listen to the German. Thus an excellent option for improving your Gerrman is to watch it in German with German subtitles.

Goodbye Lenin.
Die Stille nach dem Schuss.
Bin ich schön.
usw.

I would also find it helpfull to watch favourite English language films with the German subtitles on (especially films which are rewatchable). After time the subconcious starts to absorb new vocabulary.

I also buy German versions of English books. E.g. I enjoyed "Day of the Jackal" so much, and have read it so many times that I know it more or less of by heart. That means that when I am reading the German version, I don't even need a dictionary to pick up new vocabulary - I can guess what the word means, from the place in the story.

Also I learnt Dutch exclusively from watching Dutch subtitled (English language) TV in Belgium. This was handy because the Flemish and Dutch often to let English speakers attempt Dutch.

Even I (fluent in Dutch) had to contend with people always switching to English the moment my Flemish accent floundered.

Consequently I am very happy how inclusive the Germans are when it comes to foreigners trying to learn German. They only give praise and never "pretend" not to understand what you are saying (so that they can then switch to English).

Re: German films with subs

Top of my head

Goodbye lenin
The lives of others
Run Lola run
Any German speaking film by Wim Wenders. Der Himmer über Berlin (Wings of Desire) specially
Der bewegte Mann (The most Desired man)
Rosalie Goes Shoping by Percy Adlon (as in Bagdad Cafe's director)
Der Untergang (the downfall)
Stadtgespräch (the talk of the town) by Rainer Kaufmann so check other movies of his.

Maybe check out international film festivals and see the german entries. They are mostly subtitled.

Make it easy on you just rent any dubbed movie watch it in German with English subtitles!!! Tom Cruise apparently sounds much better when dubbed in German... Still to see/hear it for myself. But I think he would sound shite in any language...
