The first thing my relo agent did when I arrived was correct my pronunciation of Coop . . . She said it was 'Cope' and I've stuck to that without problems.

(I don't really understand what people mean when they mention 'Coop' and 'Koop' as different pronunciations)
I think they mean that Coop would rhyme with poop (sorry, best comparison I could come up with) whereas Koop has the German long o, which sounds more like koh-ohp, and if you aren't quite used to distinguishing the sounds may sound like 'cope'

Are they actually anything to do with co-op from the uk? As in The Co operative.

I always wondered
I always thought it obviously must be the same - at least the parent company. But no, they are nothing to do with each other .

Re: Coop: Pronounced "koop" or "koh-ahp"?

Coop is pronounced 'ko - opp'.
Migros is pronounced 'mee - gro(s)' (silent s).

It is what I say it is. If the locals don't understand, I just say it louder.

Some of the people i work with here say Koop. Very few seem to call it Co-Op.

Personally, I call it the Cope. It confuses everyone...

Re: Coop: Pronounced "koop" or "koh-ahp"?

I've been taught to say "KOPE," like "cope with it." Only, I try making the vowel sound just a hair longer than if I were saying the word cope, in order to differentiate Coop from cope. I love Coop - I love any grocery store with a liquor section. So civilized

Depends whether you are speaking German or French.

And all the 80 millions of germans in Germany say Ko-op!
So it is up to you ...
do you know why? because we had "kooohp" in germany too.(since the late 80ies theyre bancrupt or swallowed by some other retailer=vanished) and in its TV ads the company itself said "Koh-opp/co-op". here in CH the swiss say "coop". so i guess its right then.

Re: Coop: Pronounced "koop" or "koh-ahp"?

Summary:

German in CH: kohp
French: ko-opp (or koppé)
German in Germany: Koh-opp.

NB. K- is not aspirated in alemanic dialects outside Bündnerdeutsch and Walserdeutsch. K- is aspirated in Germany's German. French has unaspirated k- and in CH the tone is falling (first o pronounced at higher tone than second one).

Anybody willing to make audio-files?

Re: Coop: Pronounced "koop" or "koh-ahp"?

I think it should be co-op

I did not remenber the source but probably I heard it from one of my business class or a group assignment.
Co-op was in the begining the combination of several small supermarkets or retailers to compete with the big supermarket chain: Migros in Switzerlands.

They share the product the food supply chain and marketing compaingen~

So Co-op maybe....

Re: Coop: Pronounced "koop" or "koh-ahp"?

I definitely go for ko opp, but the German speakers I know (mostly from Germany) seem to go more for "cope".

And I don't care what you guys say, it's *definitely* "me grows", and I won't listen to any of your "silent ess" nonsense.

Re: Coop: Pronounced "koop" or "koh-ahp"?

I saw a group of English tourists in the Luzern station trying to get to grips with their surroundings. The guy who looked like the leader said 'Ooooh look, they have a Co-op thing over there' (Pointing at Coop obviously)

Speaking English, to me I would pronounce it typically as 'Koop' and 'Migro's' so that's what I do.

On a tour bus last year, though, the guy told me it was 'Cope' and 'Me-grow'

Anything goes here anyway Call it what you like, I don't believe there is a right or wrong in such a multi-cultural place.
