I am looking to learn Italian in Lugano. Can I get some help?

Hello everyone. It is my first post here, so Iíll make a quick introduction before I ask my question. My name is Dan, I am from London and am 21 years of age. I have family in Zug and visit them once a year in the summer. Last year whilst on our visit we went to Lugano and I fell in love with the place. I have wanted to live in Switzerland for some time now, and visiting Lugano has made me want to take action!

I am looking to study Italian in Lugano. Preferably for quite a long stay, more than 4 months. I have done some research over the internet and have found 3 sites which have been of *some* use, but not enough. The sites are:

http://www.eurolingua.com/content/view/281/505/lang,english/
http://www.amerispan.com/language_schools/Switzerland/Lugano/3568
http://languagestudy.goabroad.com/li.../listing/24360

There is some useful information on the sites, which have been helpful but I canít quite understand the pricingÖ All I can see is the 1to1 courses which are ridiculously expensive, like $4000 for 2 weeks. I donít have that kind of money. The language schools in Italy charge around $150-$400 per week which is for group courses which I would prefer, apart from Iíd love to study in Lugano.

So my main question is:

Can you help me find a language school which is in or very close to Lugano that offers group courses to study Italian? I am an absolute beginner and have no previous knowledge of the language.

Thanks in advanced,
Dan

Re: I am looking to learn Italian in Lugano. Can I get some help?

Hey Dan,

I moved to Lugano 3 months ago from London. I have studied at the ILI school near the station for the last 2 months and was really unimpressed so I am also looking to change! As you have found out it is REALLY difficult online.

I have been recommended the Migros language school in the centre but I am yet to try it out.

What I would say about ILI is they only seem to care about the money you are paying. They gave me my start date and put me in a class much, much higher than my level (which they tested when I started!). When i complained they argued back that this was my level - trust me it wasn't. I can speak a little and understand practically nothing and this was a class that had been studying for 5 months full time! It was a constant struggle and when I was finally put in my correct level the class was 14 when they promise a maximum of 10. Half the people don't pay as it is where they send the unemployed so you end up being with people who don't care, try and waste alot of time.

For an intensive course you will be looking at around 1000 - 1200 francs a month which (I think) is around 700 - 800 pounds. This doesn't include accomodation or anything but I do know some of the schools do this.

I will try and keep you posted on what I find out as hopefully it will be easier for me being here.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Katie
