Re: Multi-lingual celebrities

Charlotte Rampling is fluent in French, and has starred in italian movies too, I think.
She was in "Heading South" ("Vers le Sud"), on arte last night, a good movie about sexual tourism in Haiti in the 70s.
Her French is awesome.

I read somewhere that her best friend on the circuit is Maria Riesch, the Austrian skier, and that their families often spend holidays together.
Last time I checked, Maria Riesch is German, not Austrian. That "Anschluss" was undone in 1945.

The Fed's english is so good because his mom is South African - and they grew up Bassler but she still spoke a lot of english...her family in SA are Afrikaans - I suspect he understands some of it, but it is not mentioned anywhere...

Seems that he spent some years in Italy during his childhood, like 6 or 7 years? Quite good Italian I suppose.

Candice Bergen speaks French. Being married to Louis Malle probably helped.

Re: Multi-lingual celebrities

What's so special about a celebrity being multi-lingual compared to non-celebs?

Re: Multi-lingual celebrities

One big incentive for Jodie Foster and Charlotte Rampling to speak French is that there are more opportunities for older actresses to appear in French cinema than in Hollywood. The other alternative is usually television.

I agree, I think it's impressive being multilingual regardless of what fame you possess.

I'm always intrigued by people who speak many languages. It's a pleasant surprise.
