German classes conducted in English?

I am going to try to make my questions as clear and concise as possible. I have scoured the "language corner" and the "language" threads but did not find the answer to my questions, so here goes.

I am an American, living in NYC, planning on moving to Zurich and marrying a Swiss gentlemen. I understand for the first three months of my stay I do not need anything other than my passport, correct? However, it is, in fact mandatory, that if I plan to stay longer than the three months, I must marry within that time, correct? During those three months, can I register at a school or institution to learn German, without yet being married? One last thing, I only speak English and Spanish - very little German, ie., where is the toilet, it is over there, or here, etc. Are there any classes geared for English only speaking people, where you are taught German but the teacher speaks and explains the lessons in English?

I'm sure I will think of something else, but that is what I need help with for now.

Thanks!

Re: Have scoured "language corner" still need help...

so you're asking two questions?

Firstly, if you're planning to move and marry, contact your local Swiss embassy for the permit. There are specific permits for your case.

Secondly, learning German - you will be in a classroom with many other non-German speakers and will be taught in that manner. You might find private tuition which caters to your needs, however.

The reason you didn't find that information in the language corner, is because it would have been off-topic for that area. If you have questions about permit and government issues then you are in the wrong area - please limit your questions to specific threads (or new threads if there are no appropriate ones), but don't jumble everything into one thread. Now there was one small part of your question which was relevant to this area:

I'm not sure - but others might. Private lessons is one way to make sure you get the explanations you want, but if you want bigger classes then you may be out of luck. There are other threads in the language corner where we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of larger classes.

I've also adjusted the subject line of this thread to make some attempt at giving people an idea what this thread is about.

Mark

P.S. I don't know where you got these ideas about having to marry, but you'll find more info about this under permits.

Re: German classes conducted in English?

Hello,

For English-speaking expats seeking German lessons in the areas of Zurich and Zug, I would recommend Soft Landing (Language Training for Expats). The director, Harry Fuchs, can place you and the teachers speak English. They will come to your home or office. I know Harry personally and I think his language program is great - and he has over 20 years experience as a teacher/teacher-trainer and language school director. Try www.softlanding.ch for more information, or call 041 740 1144.

Good luck!
