Both are wrong and I have the suspicion that you use a word wrongly. What you you want to say? Walk up? "Ich bin hinaufgegangen".

I think it depends on whether you want to speak Swiss or German. The Germans would say "Ich bin die Treppe hoch" or "Ich bin nach oben", or "Ich habe oben etwas nachgeguckt", the Swiss would say "Ich bin hinaufgegangen", or rather, in Bernese dialect (the thing I speak): "I bi ufe gange", or: "Ig ha dobe nachegluegt"

Re: German grammar question "oben gegangen"

"ich bin nach oben gegangen" is correct too.
or "ich ging nach oben und habe...."
or "ich bin hinauf gegangen und habe..."

Ich bin oben gegangen.
"bin...gegangen" is right but as others have pointed out it really does need to be "nach oben".

(Incidentally this thread is now the first google search result for "oben gegangen"! )

I am German and I do never "nachgucken", sorry. "Ich bin hinaufgegangen" is perfectly correct High German and not Switzerland specific.

"hinaufgegangen" is correct, but sounds somewhat "Swiss". In proper high German you'd say "hoch gegangen" or "nach oben" gegangen.

I'm a native speaker (and a linguist) and maintain that "hinaufgegangen" can be used but doesn't sound right. I'd say "hinauf" means you go up "something" as in "Ich bin die Treppe hinauf gegangen" (I went up the stairs -> vs "I went upstairs"). I'm aware that "hinauf" is often used in the sense you're implying, though - but I think that technically, it shouldn't be.

Frankly the "sounds right" is surely a regional thing. For me - from Rheinland-Pfalz - does "hinaufgegangen" sound completely normal while "hoch gegangen" sounds like "exploded"... und wer wird denn gleich in die Luft gehen?
