Unemployment office run german course, Basel

I was wondering if anyone has ever done the german course which the Swiss Unemployment office put you on in Basel. I am starting it on Monday, it's an intensive 5 day, 20 hour a week course lasting for 3 months being run by the K5 school on Gundelingerstrasse. I have heard some things about it but not much, does anyone know if it is a good quality course and what to expect from it?

I am going to be giving it 100% as I really do want to learn the language so with that in mind do you think it would be possible for someone to get from a low A1 to a B1 standard and take the Goethe-Zertifikats B1: Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) in that 3 months?

Re: Unemployment office run german course, Basel

Hi,

actually I never took the course but intend to!

I have to apply for the unemployment office here in Basel Land (Binningen), so I was wondering if you could let me know how you did it, and were you have to go and what document you need.

Thanks in advance.

Aris

If you are on it and studying after class, it is possible. I went from A2 to the threshold of C1 in three months in French back in the day. But I was studying 20 hours a week and doing another ten or so hours of homework and immersion (movies, reading, tv) on top of it. You can do it!

You'd have to eat and sleep German. For someone gifted in languages it could be doable but I don't think it is a realistic goal. Perhaps with a prior knowledge of a language close to German, dutch for instance.

First of all AFAIK you have to register for the exam with several weeks in advance and then prepare strategies for its specifics: listening, grammar, writing, speaking.

I am a German teacher myself and can recommend the classes by K5. As it is a course for people unemployed, however, you get different kinds of learning experiences and general education levels (that is people who are more or less experiences in learning, knowing different kind of learning techniques, and being in the habit of learning etc.)
As to getting from A1 to B1 in just three months: I consider it unrealistic, even if you have lessons daily and talk and read German regularly in your everyday life. Aim at beginning or mid A2.
