I'm soon to be leaving Switzerland and returning to Australia.
This would be complicated enough but we plan to do some travelling around Europe (and beyond) on our way home so we won't really be "resident" in any country for a few months.
What I'd like to know is: can you stay resident in Switzerland even if you've quit your job and your apartment etc. The point being that we'd like to stay covered by our Swiss insurance (car, travel, medical, personal belongings) until we arrive back in our own country.
Are there downsides to this approach such as unexpected taxes?
Or... is it possible to stay insured even if you're not resident?
Yep, all you need is a travel insurance where, if something happens and you need to be flown 'home' for medical reasons, you get flown to Australia (world nomads lets you choose which country you get flown to if something happens). since in Australia you have free medical care, you'd be fine.
My partner and I are facing a similar dilemma, but with a bit of a problem. We got a permanent Australian visa and will be flying there at the beginning of Feb 2012. However, before that we want to travel a bit. The problem is that, while I can get an insurance policy which would fly me to my home country (not Switzerland) where health care is free, he is a bit at a loss. He is Swiss, and obviously unless he keeps paying insurance, if something happens and he is flown back to Switzerland, he won't be treated because he doesn't have an insurance, or he will have to pay out of his own pocket....
I still have no clue how we will be able to deal with this issue.
