Mobile Phone Contract...

Hi, I am leaving Switzerland, because I recently got a great new job contract opportunity in Denmark. But, I signed a two year contract with Orange for a new iphone in March because I did not realize I would get a great new opportunity like this.

Is there any way for me to get of my mobile phone contract with Orange without paying a huge penalty or fine....

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

There is a thread on Sunrise, but I guess the tips can be used with Orange as well:

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

Get out of jail free card... with Orange

I raised a technical issue with Orange whereby if your phone is using the 2G network for data access (because the 3G network is so poor) then your phone is unable to receive voice calls or SMS. After spending about 2 months attempting to explain this to the useless Orange helpdesk I finally managed to get the point through to them. However there is nothing they can do about this network flaw. I asked could I cancel my contract because I needed to be reachable at all times on my phone and the orange network was unable to provide this basic service; and they said yes (Anything to shut me up). I now have a clause in my contract showing that I can cancel the contract at any time without penalty because of this network fault.

For all you Sunrisers out there. Their network has the same flaw which is not surprising seeing that the same geniuses manage the operations of both networks. This could equally be used to get out of your contracts.

See previous post on this fault.
No Incoming voice calls when using data on the 2G networks of Orange or Sunrise

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

if you are leaving the country, you just need to provide orange with a confirmation from the Gemeinde that you have 'Abgemeldet'. they will cancel your contract free of charge.

I done it last year as i had planned to leave the country, got out of my 1 year orange which still had 5 months to run. Kept the phone too

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

We are in process of leaving right now.

With Orange, we were able to cancel our contract using letter from Gemeinde. No penalty fees applied.

With Swiss.com, we still have to pay service fees up to the end of our contract. We had Internet, phone, TV from them and also rented a tv from Swiss.com as part of our service. They would not let us out of our two year contract.

That's our experience.

Which is reasonable enough, a contract is a contract.

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

I also have/had a contract with Orange, and am leaving the country.

I sent Orange a letter, stating that I am leaving and will not require their services anymore. I also attached the attestation from the Commune, saying that I am indeed leaving Switzerland.

I've received a standard letter saying - oh, ok, we cancel but keep in mind that monthlies are due until end of contract.

Pissed, I called Orange (plan on 1/2 hour on the multiple choice system). When I got to talk to a human, I was told that of course, in the system my number had been closed, asked if I wanted to keep the number as a pre-pay in case of travelling back to Switzerland, re-assured that of course, due to leaving the country the termination of the contract is at no cost, and very politely told that "Orange doesn't have a standard letter for leave-the-coutry termination"... What, they just hoped I'd keep paying???

Anyway, all is well that finish well.

Is that true? Because I showed them the confirmation, but they still want me to pay the penalty

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

Hi, any more recent experiences with Orange? I'm about to renew my contract and get a new iPhone (my old one was stolen last week!), but it looks like I will be transfering out of the country in the first half of next year.

I read that most people could cancel the contract at no cost, but what about the phone? Did you have to pay any penalty?

Maybe because I do need a phone as long as I'm here? and no, a pre-pay would not be enough. And my date of transfer is not decided at all.

..but I don't think this was meant to be the point of the discussion, was it?

why? you sign a contract you stick to it, simple, orange etc provided people with genuine reasons a get out, now it seems everyone is taking the piss, getting the most expensive phone possible then buggering off. and surprise surprise orange have withdrawn that get out.

You need a phone? buy a handset, simple, orange will give you another sim card.

buy a sim only contract, no penalty, ah yes, that won't come with a 'free' iphone though.

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

You can also leave no problem with Orange and keep your phone, as long as you provide proof of leaving.
Just did so 3months ago, and i am Swiss... Just mailed them the info in writing, with copy of the paper from the townhall. Done.
No penalties. They sent me a wierd letter stating something like " contract continuing as normal"' but when i called the service, they told me that the service had been discontinued as requested, but they didn't have a standard letter for that.

Re: Mobile Phone Contract...

We are leaving and I contacted Swisscom, they told me there was a two month penalty for finishing outside of the annual cancellation, but that if I waited until the end of January to give my notice it would be without penalty - and then right at the bottom they said that if I proved with deregistration confirmation that I was leaving Switzerland, there would be no penalty.
