Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

Were we not talking about (oh here we go) Octopussies, octopods, octopi? Ahem! More than one Cephalopod.
St. Pauls bay has oodles of them, I found this one in a lithe cave and I have called it "Rubber" ain't he cute.
I tried to coax it out with a clam but it wasn't having any of it and the look was of pure exasperation: "oh not another one of them tiresome monkeys" I even tried giving a poke but he closed the door on his little cave with a shell stuck to a tentacle.
I am sure that if they had managed to invent fire it would have been us on their pizza frutti de terra?

I did, I'll have you know that I am hard at work on my tan.
Anyway, time for some more Slammerpix, this afternoon I decided that I wanted to freedive the P29 just off Cirkewwa point, it was a ex-DDR coastguard ship used by the Maltese coastguard for a while then sunk as an artificial reef, it's 35 meters down but the top is around 15 meters, so just in my range and I should be able to get some pictures.
But such a popular dive site like this is one of the main attractions and at the get in/get out point there was a diver gridlock, like the Gubrist tunnel, Friday afternoon at four. But I waited my turn in line, feeling naked among all the Robocop divers, I wasn't in the water for five frikking seconds before I got a jelly hit, then another, I dodged a third and swam into a condom.
YUK!!! I think I would rather have the jelly.
Screw that for a game of divers, so I got back on the pig and went a few miles to the popeye village, same thing there, wall to wall jellies.
Did you know that when you get stung it makes a sound in your mind like you get if you drag a live wire over sheet metal, feels that way on your skin too.
In the end over to Mistra bay and a jelly free swim.
By the way Maltese scientist have successfully crossed a Jellyfish with a seasponge, it turns them into a mere trifle.

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

Had a friend who lived in Malta.
All the marine scientists say there are no great white sharks in the Med.

One day he took a walk around the area where the fisherman live; there were great white shark jaws decorating many of their huts

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

They catch sharks at least every few months or so and only a few week ago one was sighted just here in St. Pauls bay, but the last great white Shark on Mano action was back in the eighties and before that late fifties.
Of course there is nothing stopping them from mounting lasers on their heads and going on a rampage tomorrow.
Worst danger is to step on a sea urchin and the mauve stinger, in 2007 they wiped out a salmon farm and caused over 1 million Pounds worth of damage.
Other jellies like the Portuguese man o war and the box jelly have made the news lately having been seen for the first time in these waters.
There is a jelly-app that tells you from where the wind is coming and where it is probably jelly free, all the same it pays to do a quick 360° jelly scan every now and then when you go swimming.

No marine biologist would say that, quite the opposite:

Fun fact: Just because you don't see them does not mean there are not around...

Nah, try sitting on one. Actually, don't. I sat on one while taking a snorkeling break. Didn't feel a thing when I sat down. When I got up my leg burned and itched like 1,000 needles stabbing me over and over...for the next 6 hours.

Ha ha, i can just imagine the smirk of the nurse here at Mater Dei hospital when she digs the spines out with a set of (very small)pliers.
Actually I have been hunting the brown seaurchins to try out the maltese Rizzi with spaghetti.
Om nom nom and then some.

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

Went for a swim around fort St.Elmo at the very tip of Valletta, just off the land the seabed drops off an underwater cliff to a depth of 30-35 ft. I dived down and on the spur of the moment turned the camera round pointing up and got the picture of a sheer amazing alien landscape straight out of Tolkien.

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

Went for another swim today best thing to do in all this heat, but this time on the other side of the island, where the clear water is.
Dived down and on the way up this "thing" came crashing and splashing, scared the fornicate out of me for a second, it seems that as you or I would take a dog walkies, this guy takes his dog swimmies.

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

Started to dive reaaal deep and by now I can get down almost 20 Meters. Ok So I strap 6 Kilos of lead around me to compensate for, Ahhh! Let´s call it buoyancy.
Using sign language I asked one of the robocop bottle divers to take a picture of me trying to raise the HMS Maori single-handed, somehow it did´t work, must be stuck or something.
I simply love the blue, especially when you point the camera upwards, and can´t you smell the flowers?

Is this the "let's make the expats in Switzerland jealous about the Ocean they don't have" thread? I am one of the robocop divers you mentioned... but I take better pics of my friends than the guy did of you...

Palau, but if you ever decide to take a bottle with you - there are some legendary dive sites quite similar to this one on Malta I believe...

Palau is mostly for sharks and WW2 wrecks. Here is a cargo ship full of depth charges...

Benny the Fish...!
Amongst all the webcams around Malta, Benny the fish has cult status.

Benny lives in his pot and is the star of the underwater webcam set up by scuba divers, he get´s very protective of his pot and chases any intruding fish away, only when the divers bubble past does he go and hide himself.
Here take a look, but I warn you it´s addictive.

I looked it up as I was sure it was pretty much the same - the dive site you'd want to try is the "blue hole" on Gozo. Should be even better rock formations than Palau.
