I looked it up as I was sure it was pretty much the same - the dive site you'd want to try is the "blue hole" on Gozo. Should be even better rock formations than Palau.
Why thank you for that Treverus, twas my day off today so guess where I went.
Why, jumped on the pig and buggered off to Gozo. There is a reason why they call it the blue window and the blue hole, trust me, never been to Palau but it simply can´t be much better than this.

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

I climbed a mountain today, better, I swam under the arch, 18 meters to the bottom and on the way up decided to go under the arch, it´s "only" 5 meters long or so but it is under water and there is no surface, just unyielding rock, if I got into trouble, simply dumping the lead belt and corking it to the surface won't work here, but I did notice the air pockets like pools of mercury in the rock. totally surreal and when I got to the other side I felt 10 feet tall.
However after a few hours I started to cramp up and spent the rest of the afternoon watching nature at it´s best.

Really loved Gozo whilst on holiday with the family. Definitely the most beautiful part of Malta, albeit the sea state was a lot rougher a few weeks back! Wish I stayed there for the whole two weeks TBH. Glad you are still enjoying yourself and Malta's somewhat hidden treasures.

Hey, T.I.M. (this is Malta) 10 times over budget and four times as long as planned, they have just finished the plugging in the extension cable from Sicily, last night the power went out on the entire archipelago.

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

Just gotten some more pictures ready, I do hope that they are not too disturbing, I hear that the summer above the 45° parallel has been a bit cool this year.
(writes Slammer with an evil sounding giggle)

A sharks eye view of a Luzzu with a bunch of snacks touries on board.
Duhduht, duhduhtdudut….!

The blue creek at Għar Lapsi.

Under the blue creek, it goes down to 14 meters before dropping down to 30 meters, a hell of a way down.
Moving on..

At the blue hole…

…looking into the blue hole…

Slammer going to the bottom of the blue hole like a big suppository.

Amazing sky, amazing rock, amazing sea.

Just round the corner (more or less) in Mistra bay

I love the blue and the deep and the feeling of weightlessness and the serenity of a world underwater.

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

Sadly the old SlamKam, the one I scrounged off Bexie shot it's last picture at a depth of 18 meters, one push of the button and a little bubble from out of the seal was all it took,
So I needed a new SlamKam, actually I wanted another Oregon scientific, but at 177 E's a bit off the chart, not to mention a GoPro, until I found the "almost but not entirely quite unlike the GoPro" SJ4000 for 60-odd Euros on Amazon.
I gave it a charge and went down on the HMS Maori, let me rephrase, SWAM down to the HMS Maori. The wreck was of course her usual murky underwater lump of metal, so it was a good first test.
The rest of the afternoon was spent comparing the SJ4000 with a buddies six-week old GoPro, a no contest by the way, price beats anything a GoPro can offer
Comes with all the clips and straps you can eat, and looks totally cool, gonna have me some fun with this sucker.

Sorry Bexie your ATC 9 is toast, pretty soggy toast to boot.

I got the wife a GoPro for Christmas (hard to believe, but she really wanted one...) - I am very unimpressed about all those action cameras to be honest.

If I was to make a recommendation to you: I know it's more than the 60 EUR you mentioned, but you can have WAY more fund with a Canon Powershot D30. A friend takes it on dives as it is waterproof till 25 meters... and I was quite surprised about the image quality of it as the "rugged outdoor cam" genre is normally not focussing on that too much. 25M is frankly not enough for my use case as I tend to go deeper, but perfect for your free diving. Since you do not need a case is it super compact and makes pictures three times better than any of the action cameras - for about the same price of a GoPro Silver.

I got a chance to play with one belonging to a diver, Hummed and Hawed but at 299 a pop ordered online it´s simply too expensive.
By the way they go for 399 here, buying electronics on Malta is analog to buying meat in CH.

Arrgh! Been trying to upload video, to photobucket or youtube, all I get is pixelated lowRes crap or it loads to 95% then freezes, managed to get a few seconds of halfway decent video, but how the hell do you get the good stuff that I see on youtube uploaded without going mental.

Ah long time no see, methinks I got the video thingy to an OK standard, so let's have a look..!
Snorkeling and free diving around Anchor bay (popeye village)

Over scorpion cave in anchor bay.

Scorpion cave, looks like the sarlacc-pit to me, it is an underwater cave leading into a chamber, I chickened out at the last minute, gonna go with some friends and try again.

In and around the rock gardens at anchor bay.

Last nights storm over St Paul's bay

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

It has gone very cold here on fantasy island, down to 20°-25° and it's freeeeeezing, had a nasty head cold for a week or so and I have had to wear a pullover, have had to don socks and shoes, winter sucks, and the rainy season has started.
Anyway here are a few pictures, I take the coast road to Valletta in the morning and now and then I get treated to a sunrise that needs to be seen.

Almost corny with the sailboat.

The morning sky on fire.

Arrival of a Queen.

A Queen by any other name.

I find that the workday starts much nicer with a fiery sunrise.

I ride a bit earlier than I need to so that I can sit somewhere and watch the day arrive, like here on Manoel Island.

Sometimes the day ends in fury, behold my power, my beauty and my magnificence.

But the swimming season is not over yet, where to go depends on waves, current, wind, this time they dictated I go to Ċirkewwa point and annoy the divers there.

Memo to me; when showing off, like swimming under a overhang upside down, try not to hit bottom.

And Iron Pig say "Hi", I may be riding her with Maltese tags soon, now that is gonna be a story to tell.

Slammer, your photos are great and make me look forward to the next time I will visit home again.

If you haven't been to Mdina yet, then I really recommend you visit our old capital city and please do take the time to sit and have a coffee or drink a beer or a Kinnie at Fontanella - great views and a great selection of cakes to choose from....my favourite spot

Fontanella for chocolate cake! Though their milkshakes are pretty good too.

Ciappetti in Mdina is pretty cool too, in an old converted house with lovely garden. Sign outside says "unattended children will be sold as slaves". you have been warned!

Re: How do you make a Maltese cross…..?

As a nation Malta is tiny, a mere speck on the expanse of the Mediterranean sea, to give it a perspective, Malta is just over half the size of Lake Constance, however with regard to history, Malta punches far above it's weight, everywhere you go nothing has been left untouched by millennia of human hands.
Here is one such change in the landscape
You sure can't see it from Space, heck, you can't even see the Island from space, but across the entire width of Malta is a wall, the maps have it as the Victoria lines, but people know it better as the great wall of Malta. It stretches 10 Kilometres, bisecting the island between Fomm-ir Rih in the west and Fort Madliena in the east.
Built in 1722 by the Order of Malta it follows the landscape along the top of a cliff thrown up by a geographical fault.
It was built to stop an enemy that never came and today it marks the boundary between the densely inhabited south and the farms and fields of the north.
And you can walk along it, some parts have been restored, some are in ruin and some are sheer wilderness.
A few days ago Fatmanfilms and I went for a walk along a stretch of the wall.
Come and have a look.

The wall runs on top of a vertical cliff giving stunning views over a timeless landscape.

From coast to coast…

..following the landscape.

Nice and green now that the rains have come.

On a brilliant day.

From the vantage point above the plain you can get a good view of the "big ear" a pre-radar tracking device, a 200-foot long curved concrete wall designed to listen for the sound of the aero engines from enemy aircraft coming in from Sicily. It is aimed at Catania and can listen over 35 miles, that gives a six minute warning, time enough to Lock and load.

The only one if it's kind outside the UK.

Now in part a storage for GO telecom.

Had to go all Bambi eyes to be let in, but it was well worth it.

From three focus points the range and direction could be computed quite accurately.

It still has the original anamorphic camouflage pattern to become indistinguishable from the surrounding fields to attacking aircraft.

And it still works. Although there are no longer Me 109's and Ju 87's and Cants and Macchi C.202's incoming, you can hear many times amplified the eerie background sound of Malta.
