Warning: Unrest at Calais Ferry Port - delays likely

The little one and I drove off the cross channel ferry yesterday afternoon on our way back to CH into some pretty serious unrest with riot police trying to round up what seemed like several hundred illegal immigrants trying to get onto vehicles queueing up to leave Calais. Riot police in full gear with cs gas and rubber bullets, numerous fires on the grassy sides of the dual carriageway and even a couple of fires of burning tyres on the carriageway itself. Police and immigrants running across the carriageways etc. Mildly alarming but the traffic in the opposite direction had come to a standstill as rioters stopped the traffic and were trying doors and truck doors etc in an attempt to get on board. I was glad we were not travelling in the other direction.

Re: Warning: Unrest at Calais Ferry Port - delays likely

The French really need to get a handle on this. The whole situation is getting out of hand. That's the second time this year that this has happened and it will only become more frequent. It's also a waste of the immigrants' time as if they should manage to get into a truck/car they'll only be reported at check-in. Why they don't seek asylum as they should I don't know.

Mind you, the British aren't much better at it. I've been watching a few of the UK Border Force programmes recently and if they catch someone working in Britian illegally they arrest them and then release them, expecting them to turn up at a court hearing later. Needless to say, most don't.

A report in the Daily Mail (apologies for source).

Tragically a teenage girl was knocked down and killed by a car while trying to get to a truck going to the UK.

They know where these people are coming from. Stick them on the next plane back home. No processing, no appeals.

that's the point, they don't, and they wont tell them, they throw all there ID's away which is why the UK can't send them back when they are caught either.

Is France really that bad? Why are they so hell bent on going to the UK?

This was what I was wondering.

To be caught up in it albeit for only a few minutes it makes you realise the desperation of these people. When you have nothing, you have nothing to risk and everything to gain.

"Their faces covered, a gang of Ethiopian youths marches towards a rival camp in Calais brandishing sticks and rocks. As they come into sight, a group of Eritreans arm themselves and rush out to defend their territory."

If the journos can find out so can the various police forces.

Better benefits so they think.

I don't understand why the French are blaming the British for this. Yes the benefits may be better, but these guys have got into the Schengen zone somehow, that's not the UK's fault. If they are asylum seekers, surely it's France's problem to round them up and deal with them!?

because the journo's don't have to prove anything to print a story. the Gov has to prove where they came from and if its safe to send them back before they can do anything. When the person you're asking has NO ID and won't tell you where they are from then what are they supposed to do?? throw them in prison till they speak??

Sounds like a good idea to me. It's certainly better than living in a makeshift camp, scrounging food, etc.

The French need a proper camp and processing centre and to make it clear to them that if they don't seek asylum there they can't find it anywhere else. Photos taken at the time and sent to the British security forces would make it easy to send them back to France if they manage to cross the Channel illegally.

that's exactly what happens, when they are caught in dover they are shipped back to france, and again, and again

France had a proper camp, but it was closed iirc at the request of the british.

I read somewhere that in the UK as opposed to mainland Europe, you don't need to carry identity cards, and that may be a factor in immigrants wanting to move to Britain. I don't think it's simply a matter of language because French still carries a long way on the continent.

Then again, I may be wrong. Anybody have better ideas?

And you'll be paying for this prison out of your pocket, will you?

And also, not sure if you know this, but appearances can be changed. Believe it or not, i don't look the same as i did a year ago.

And we're not paying for other measures now? Didn't the UK recently pledge an extra 30mil to help with the problem? That's on top of what they already spend.

Facial recognition should catch most of them, no matter what they do - short of plastic surgery which I doubt they can afford.

Re: Warning: Unrest at Calais Ferry Port - delays likely

Many of these people arrived in Italy by boat and are registered as asylum seekers in Italy. They have left illegally and are trying to reach friends and relatives in the UK who have told them it's the promised land.

Why France can't deport them back to Italy is a mystery, after all most of them are illegals. But France blames the UK as we refuse to take them!

Some illegals were caught today, they were seen riding on the top of a truck, on the M20 motorway, the driver saw a dangling arm in his mirror!

That's why we are here. Used to pay taxes towards this nonsense. Try getting your granny a hip replacement in the NHS after she worked and paid taxes all her life. Everyone there should vote UKIP.

if we can make the UK a better place, then all the expats would run back, taxes or not.
