Big items to dispose

It is very expensive to get rid of unwanted big items, such as used cabinet and couches in Switzerland. Just thinking of paying the pick-up and disposal service or renting the transportation is already throwing me off my budget.

What is the fastest and cheapest way to dispose them? Is it common to sell used big items over the internet in Switzerland? Any advice?

Really? Have you checked what your local rubbish collection service charges? Ours has standard charges. Larger items are CHF5.60 (eg bedframe, wardrobe), smaller items are CHF3.10 (chair, pair of skis).

Re: Big items to dispose

Just put them on the street, with a big 'Gratis' sticker on.

.... or just advertise them for free.

I picked up a very nice sofa, free, because it was located on the 8th floor, wouldn't fit in the lift and needed carrying down a very narrow staircase (2 flights per floor, too).

It was probably a relief to the former owner, just to get it out, as they were moving.

Re: Big items to dispose

Bern Brockenhaus will pick the items up for free if they're in good condition. Give them a ring!
As will other Brockis!

There is, of course, a danger that you get fined for dumping, though.
All depends where you are regarding the type of street, and if you can actually put stuff on private land (boundary).

I've seen much stuff with a 'Gratis' sticker, but seem to recall, it was on the private side of the public street border.

Re: Big items to dispose

Most Gemeinde's will have a place where you can bring your unwanted items and dispose for a fee. You can also go to a neighboring town if yours doesn't have a dump. I haven't heard of pickup service though (except Brocki's).
