Forgot to inform Commune about departure from Switzerland permannently

I left in a hurry and I forgot to inform the commune about my Departure.

Will there be any repercussions.

It's been 6 months. I just remembered when my friend who is about to leave swiss asked me about it.

You forgot a lot of things when you left didn't you?

Did you de register from your health insurance etc. ? you normally need the proof of departure from the commune to be able to do that. If not have you been paying your premiums?

Fab. And people ask why insurance, rent, you-name-it is higher for foreigners.

PS. The country is, or was in your case, SWITZERLAND...

It's quite possible that since you were still resident then this Betreibung Can a Betribung ever effect a non-swiss citizen ? got underway in some form and fees were adding up, if your name was still on the mailbox at your address in Switzerland, then attempts will have been made to serve you with it, though since they weren't able to notify you, it won't have got very far!

I hope he didn't forget to cancel his rental agreement too? Intrum Justitua will be the least of his worries if he's been wracking up rent arrears during all this time.

Indeed, that's what they did when I deregistered my daughter a month after she left.

On the other hand, when my other daughter moved to the other end of Ticino, and never bothered to deregister at the old place and register at the new, the new commune did it for her, AFTER TWO YEARS (and didn't back date it)!

Useful thread, thanks. I'm leaving at the end of the year. Does anyone know when is the earliest I can start the de-registration process?

One related question... how many days one can stay in Switzerland after de-registration? I think, we need the commune letter for phone, TV, mobile contract cancellations. Thanks.

Re: Forgot to inform Commune about departure from Switzerland permannently

Depends on your subsequent tourist status. If you come from a country that doesn't need a tourist visa to visit Switzerland then you effectively become a tourist and have up to 3 months before you need to leave. If you do need a tourist visa though then you need to leave on or before your deregistration date. Don't forget you can deregister in advance, just telling the commune/gemeinde the date when you're leaving/de-registering and they'll be able to give you paperwork for cancelling various contracts when you notify them. So that could be several weeks before your actual deregistration date.

Oh... Didn't know that one can de-register few weeks in advance! This makes it easy to plan. Thanks.

Re: Forgot to inform Commune about departure from Switzerland permannently

Check with your commune/gemeinde about how early you can notify them, but it should be easy enough to do. Say you go in on the 15th of the month and inform them you want to deregister on the 30th. They'll sort out the paperwork using that date and then give you a letter/document to that effect that you can use to cancel your contracts.

You do need to make sure you give due notice by registered letter too don't forget. If your contract/s need a month's/3 months' notice then send the letter/s on time and follow that up with a copy of the deregistration document once you have that.
