Driving to the UK via Calais next Saturday/Sunday

Is there anyone out there in Need of a ride to the UK next week and possibly returning the following week? Have room for 1 due loads of luggage. This way I wouldn't have to do all the driving myself

Have you read the news? Calais is in turmoil with striking workers and emigrants causing trouble and big delays there. Have you considered going via Dunkirk with DFDS ferries as an alternative?

Calais

Yes I totally agree with that via Dunkirk. However both arrive/depart from Dover, so on the way back i.e. Dover/Dunkirk allow more time to get to Dover.

Over the years have found DFDS, Dunkirk, very accommodating if one arrive early or later for crossing - well within the 2 hours either side for each crossing. Either we could board for the earlier or later crossing, we were never, so far charged extra, but from what I could work out, they boarded one different for departure, no big deal.
At the moment from what I have read in the news, both crossing are not causing people for extra charges for late arrival for crossings because of traffic, just they put the non arrivals for correct time in a secondary line/queu for departure, kind of like if availability for that ferry.

Separately, we have preferred the 2 hours crossing on DFDS, always found that ferry more relaxing, Nice long windows, comfortable seating, no noisy foot passengers, nice to take a break from driving.

Just we have not use DFDS since they took over the Calais route. The previous operators, we were not impressed from noise of foot passengers together with lack of multiple vacant comfortable seating & high windows.

I think the rule of thumb is, avoid picking up hitchhikers near to the port.

I hope no one is daft enough to pick up hitch hikers and attempt to cross any boarder, land or sea, with them.

Our friends drove over to the UK last week via the tunnel and didn't experience any hold-ups or disruption. I was quite surprised actually.

Well they have to use a passport to declare their identity in any situation. So it really comes down to how border control feels about it.
