Swiss citizen locating to UK

As I am getting closer to retirement age I have been considering moving back to the UK along with my swiss girlfriend. Had a quick scout around the forum and across the net and it looks like a swiss would have no problem in taking up residency in the UK.

Has anyone got recent experience of doing the same and would my girlfriend need any kind of residency permit along the lines of B, C permits here. As she's 5 years younger than me she would probably look for a job and work for a few years. Would she need to get an NI number and qualify for NHS treatment straight away?

You might wish to review the Auslandschweizer-Organisation website for emigration topics:

http://aso.ch/en/consultation/emigra...n-euefta-state

For AHV-related issues, see this brochure "Leaving Switzerland":

Re: Swiss citizen locating to UK

My Swiss husband (Boyfriend at the time) lived with me in the UK for 3 years. He didn't have to do anything at all, no permit or registration needed.

He was working so needed to get a National Insurance number and registered for council tax, registered at Drs & Dentist etc, but that was all. You can register with the Swiss Embassy in London I believe, but it's not compulsory and my husband didn't bother.

You might want to read this thread re Swiss pensions and the possible need to continue to pay Swiss health insurance even though you're no longer living here.

Re: Swiss citizen locating to UK

Thanks for the good replies. The NHS question arose as a friend of mine living in Asia was back in the Uk and went into a hospital as he had blood in his urine. Was given a blood and urine test plus an ultrasonic scan. 2 weeks later a bill for over 2000 quid was sent in the post.

Re: Swiss citizen locating to UK

For health insurance for Swiss in the EU/ UK, you might wish to review these two documents. There is a different approach between a Swiss pensioned in the UK and a Swiss working in the UK:

Yes.. he wasn't a UK resident, so not entitled to NHS treatment. As soon as your girlfriend is living in the UK and has a UK address, she will be entitled to NHS care.

Quite correct, why would a non resident expect free health coverage?

Re: Swiss citizen locating to UK

now I seem to remember that you need to be back for 6 months to become elegible- but am not sure- Anyone knows for SURE.

OH is British and Swiss, I am Swiss and British- might go back to UK one day- so far I've lived 19 years in CH, 39 in UK and 6 back in CH. No Swiss pension though, and an address in the UK to go back to, if ever...

You have to be a UK resident, registration as such does not exist. You need to be in the UK for 6 months (or any EU country) to change your driving license. If you have not been there for 6 months & a day you may not be resident.

Possibly officially.. but no one checks. We both changed our driving licences in the first month and registered at Drs & Dentists.

The UK council tax registration system is the closest thing to resident registration we have in the UK. No non-resident would sign up to pay that. So in my eyes if you register for council tax and on the electoral role, you are resident.

You self certified in the declaration that you had been a resident for 6 months, false declaration is a criminal offence & you may end up paying UK taxes whilst you were not resident.

You can't have your cake & eat it, your either been living in the UK for 6 months, a resident entitled to a UK driving license & liable to UK taxation for the last 6 months pr you have not.......
