I already moved, but still have issues! Cell phone and drivers license

Hi friends,

We moved up to the UK a few months ago and thought we tied all our loose ends. Fate had other plans :P

I had a cell phone plan through Sunrise and called them to cancel my contract. It was a special discounted contract that I got by working in the Fribourg canton, so I don't have a login through the website or anything. I called ahead to warn them and it was all fine, I sent my de-registration letter, etc. Still they send me a bill. What? I email and they tell me to send another letter. I do, and still nothing. I email them again and they say to call 0800 707 500. Unfortunately 0800 numbers don't seem to work outside the country. I have no idea what to do. I will not pay this stupid bill when I didn't use the phone and I already officially left!

Second issue--I had a drivers' license in Switzerland. Unfortunately in the UK as an American I can't just get my license like I did in Switzerland by just showing up and filling out some papers with my US license. But, they would accept a Swiss license. I planned to do the ol' dosey-do round-about but my wallet was recently stolen with the Swiss license inside. I went to fill out the form to replace it but it looks like they'll want my residence card. It's weird because I read on this forum how the Swiss license doesn't really expire, so I could have kept using it in principle. Is there a way to get a replacement license without living in the country?

Thanks in advance! This forum continues to help me even when we've already moved We miss it there and wish there was an equivalent in the UK.

Did you send the letter to Sunrise using registred mail? Allways use registred mail to cancel a contract.

Although, the Swiss license does not expire you still would need a UK/EU license within certain time. I do not know the exact time frame but in Germany you have to switch within 6 Months.

Spot on with the registered mail. I am actually just about to go through the same thing and have already spent lots of money on many registered letters. My mobile phone contract still has to run for another 6 months beyond my leaving date- despite sending the registered cancellation letter 3 months ago and including confirmation that I will start a new job outside of Switzerland.

Regarding the driving license - I am not sure that you are right there, as my Swiss license has the same expiry date as that on my UK license, which they took in exchange for issuing the Swiss one. I will go and exchange it back (for the usual fee of course!)once I have de-registered.

Thanks for the comments. I did not do registered mail, I didn't even think of it. With all our other de-reigstration stuff it was relatively smooth. Oh well, lesson learned. I finally heard back and they apparently didn't receive either of my 2 letters (?!) but they did cancel the contract and released us from the bill. So that was nice of them.

As for the license, I guess I am SOL My husband has his, he will submit it to the UK authorities to get it traded in for a UK one. I wish I didn't get that wallet stolen Or that there was some way to get my Swiss license back so I can do this round-about option.

With any cancellation you want to be able to prove you did so in due time. Since a cancellation usually is automatically replied to by a confirmation letter that will contain additional information where applicable/necessary there's no need for registered mail. Simply call them up (and explicitly ask for a confirmation letter just to make sure one will be provided) if there's enough time left.

Usually the reason for registered mail is if you need proof without the other party providing such, of if you're in a hurry so you can't wait for that confirmation. For instance if you cancel mandatory health insurance now, you won't have confirmation before the deadline is past (it's tomorrow) so you would use registered mail in this case. Had you cancelled a month ago you could have done so by phone or email provided you get confirmation in time.

You seem to have wasted quite a few bucks.

I don't think you can get a swiss license without swiss residency. Had it been stolen you'd report the theft, the protocol of which might (should, I think) be accepted by british authorities so they can issue the british equivalent. There must be a similar procedure for ordinary loss (perhaps signing some form at the swiss embassy in London?); call the police office where you lived, they'll tell you.

Check in here:

Seems that you just need to apply for a copy in the UK. Do you have a copy of your swiss licence?

good luck!

You can get at least an official attestation from your previous MFK/SAN.
In certain cases you will get a time limited Swiss license.

If you have a problem with get one or the other quote the following law:
Verkehrszulassungsverordnung Artikel 24 Absatz 2 und 3.

Ordonnance réglant l'admission à la circulation routière, Article 24, al. 2 et 3.
