I assume you spoke to someone on the phone who may no longer work there, and may not have made a record of the call on your account. When dealing with Cablecom, if you don't have it in writing you don't have it.

| | | | Re: Leaving Switzerland Permanently | Quote: | | | | | For EU citizens, a visit to the Stadthaus (Zürich - Stadthausquai 17) involved filling out the inevitable A4 form then a visit to the Steueramt across the road to make sure everything is above board financially (no doing runners etc.). I have an accountant (Steuerberater/Treuhand), so I signed a form giving him authority to act for me should there be any monies due, Tax 2009 etc. Across the road again to the Stadthaus again to deliver the piece of paper the Steueramt gave me.. The Stadthaus peeple then gave me another piece of paper to take to the Amtshaus in Helvetiaplatz (Tram no. 8 from Paradeplatz). All in all, the whole process took about two hours and cost CHF 60,00 for two people. A whole morning with the swiss civil service, CHF 60,00 is reasonable.
All misspelt words are my own dooing, honestly.
Larry PLover. | | | | | So I took myself off to the Stadthaus this morning to de-register, after visiting Kreisburo 11 on Friday to be told deregistration happens only at the Stadthaus. The gentleman I spoke to in the Stadthaus was very pleasant and duly sent me over to the Steueramt to get the piece of paper re my taxes. Then I met a lovely lady in the Steuramt office who took one look at my apprehensive face and broke into English, gave me a form to sign to give an accountant (that I found through the "find an accountant" thread on here) power of attorney ("Vollmacht").
When I went back to the Stadthaus with my stamped piece of paper, he gave me an "Abmeldebestatigung", and wished me luck in the future, cost CHF 30. No trip to the Amtshaus was necessary (that I was told of).
Rather pleasant and definitely nowhere near as traumatic as I was expecting. But have I missed something re the Amtshaus?

Bank account I would wait to cancel. It may be handy to have a Swiss account if you receive delayed payments of depots and similar. And one account I would keep indefinitely. It never hurts to have a Swiss bank account. | | | | | ---
Not sure with the recent rules if they allow one to keep the account. It is indeed very necessary for the depots etc.

Does anyone know if the de-registration letter can get you of a apartment lease? That's the only one I'm worried about
Just trying to get my flight booked back to Cape Town, then to the Swiss Authorities I go with my go date.

Having been back in the UK 6 months now I find myself with a rather large swiss tax bill, seeing as I only earnt 'peanuts' as my accountant so kindly pointed out I was rather shocked.
Am I able to challenge this and what difference does it make if I am no longer resident in Switzerland?
Many thanks

Did you deregister when you left?
I'm leaving at the end of the month, and today my accountant told me that to deregister they're going to expect me to pay all of 2009 and 2010 taxes before I do deregister. Gulp. I just paid off 2008 last week. Oh, and I'm unemployed...but they still want full tax money (oh, don't get me started...I'm married, but because my husband moved to the UK before me and isn't resident here, they're taxing me single which is about double the amount to pay if they taxed me as married....)

Using the official tax calculator in Basel Stadt, enter in a nice round number like 60,000. Married, no kids, no church tax = 3224. Single, no kids, no church tax = 8027

Maybe if you take your papers to the commune and show them you're married they make necessary changes or does your husband's situation dictate otherwise, ie does he pay tax or officialy domiciled outside CH ?

Am I able to challenge this and what difference does it make if I am no longer resident in Switzerland? | | | | | Dear Cat, I am traveling this weekend out of Switzerland. How did this problem happen to you? Did you forget to "de-register"? I have already de-registered, so that I have received my Abmeldebestatigung (Confirmation of Deregistration). Should I still worry about something? Do I need to send it to someone?
And for everybody, does anyone have an answer? Thanks.

Did any of you have the answer? Then, please publish it here.
I also have a Post Finance bank account and I decided to keep the account open, do they charge CHF 6 by month when you change your residence address to one out of Switzerland? It is not very much but it would be good to know this.
And for everybody, does anyone have an answer? Thanks.
