So paying over double the married rate is not so bad? Especially when you're married and not single!
HI Shell, is your hubby de-registered? Are either of you Swiss? Do either of you have an EU-C permit? Is your hubby eligible to file for the same tax year (even only partially?). Otherwise he could "come back" for 9 days to requalify before you leave What about extra deductions on your income for his/your departure costs?

Was that Swisspost or some other account?
Probably Credit Suisse who have a 72CHF fee when you don't leave 15k CHF in the account per year. Postfinance is 3CHF a month if you don't have 7500 CHF in or 2CHF p.m. if online only.

Did you deregister when you left?

I'm leaving at the end of the month, and today my accountant told me that to deregister they're going to expect me to pay all of 2009 and 2010 taxes before I do deregister. Gulp. I just paid off 2008 last week. Oh, and I'm unemployed...but they still want full tax money (oh, don't get me started...I'm married, but because my husband moved to the UK before me and isn't resident here, they're taxing me single which is about double the amount to pay if they taxed me as married....)
Usually you get 3 months to complete a partial year tax return upon announcement of leaving/departure. Yes if you haven't been paying in monthly then they'll want you at least to set up a payment plan before departure so you could send money once established in the UK/abroad. Set up a GBP online account in your bank to make currency transfers and avoid currency conversion charges on the GBP transfer to CH (and pay only the currency conversion rate once the GBP reaches your CH bank for internal transfer to your CHF account). Alternatively EUR transfers even to/from UK/CH are covered under SEPA (free under certain conditions). Of course you then have GBP-EUR-CHF conversion spread.

Having been back in the UK 6 months now I find myself with a rather large swiss tax bill, seeing as I only earnt 'peanuts' as my accountant so kindly pointed out I was rather shocked.

Am I able to challenge this and what difference does it make if I am no longer resident in Switzerland?

Dear Cat, I am traveling this weekend out of Switzerland. How did this problem happen to you? Did you forget to "de-register"? I have already de-registered, so that I have received my Abmeldebestatigung (Confirmation of Deregistration). Should I still worry about something? Do I need to send it to someone?

And for everybody, does anyone have an answer? Thanks.
And so, what was the problem with the Cat's case?

We just had our first successful test of the vacuum bags. 36 quid for 15 of them. Managed to get half a box of soft toys down to a third of their volume. If you're moving long haul and paying for volume moved, then this can save you a lot of money on soft toys, clothes duvets, etc. Basically anything that can be compressed.
Thank you Colonel Boris, this is advice seems to be very useful.

I had seen them in Ikea but they don't do them anymore.
Talking of vacuums... don't forget bags for your hoover if it's MioStar...
Please, does anybody know where I can find vacuum bags?

The bags are somewhat dependent on the model Vakuumierer you have. Have a look at:

If you have a tax advisor, you can give that person power of attorney. They can also pretty well calculate what you will need to pay so that you can be prepared.

Their professional status also will set the officials at ease, no doubt
They seem to insist on the power of attorney but can the estimates be done without the power of attorney ?

So I took myself off to the Stadthaus this morning to de-register, after visiting Kreisburo 11 on Friday to be told deregistration happens only at the Stadthaus. The gentleman I spoke to in the Stadthaus was very pleasant and duly sent me over to the Steueramt to get the piece of paper re my taxes. Then I met a lovely lady in the Steuramt office who took one look at my apprehensive face and broke into English, gave me a form to sign to give an accountant (that I found through the "find an accountant" thread on here) power of attorney ("Vollmacht").
In case you are expecting a refund, how does it work ? Would the accountant (powe rof attorney) transfer the money to you ?

Same question. I'll be leaving in a few months, I'll finish and file my 2010 return, I may also send a warning letter to the Steuramt soon because I haven't heard back on my 2008 or 2009 returns. I haven't used an accountant in the past, and would generally prefer not to, but will look for one now if it's going to be a problem not to have one.

Re: Leaving Switzerland Permanently

Before starting my rant, can anyone clarify where they got the Vetretter form from? Was it at the ZH Stadthaus, or somewhere else nearby?

So I just spoke to about 4 people at the tax office. They've said it's impossible for them to look at my taxes before I leave (my 2009 taxes that is, it's impossible for them to look at my 2009 taxes, in less than 2 friggin years, because they're just that good at what they do). I need to give a Vertreter (deputy). Un bloody believable, they also haven't given me a definitive amout for 2008 but that one, maybe, just, 3 years after being filed can be finished. And 2010, well, that just wasn't going to happen.

My frustration is that I've done my own taxes for 2008 - 2010, so now I need to get someone else to sign off on those. I planned on getting an accountant for 2011, but now they'll have to be quasi responsible for years they haven't seen at all. The other thing, I'm not leaving an account open indefinately here to cover an unknown tax liability (why can't the forms give some indiciation of whether you owe money in the end ). Agggh, rant almost over, it's just quite a piss off, how can they take this long to look at the taxes! I'd consider leaving without de-registering, but to get my second pillar money out of the country I need the stamp.

Another leaving Switzerland...

Hello,
Since my job was redrawn due reorganisations I need to move back to Sweden.

What do I need to do now?

I heard something about a de-regestration form, but where do I get this?

I live in Luzern and I'm also registrated here, can I fix my de-regestration at the same place whch I did my registration? (Don't know the name of the place, but I know the location...)

Anything else I need to do except to get this de-registration form?

Thanks for all possible help!

If you have been here at least one year, you are eligible for unemployment
insurance in Switzerland.

To deregister, you just go to the community( Gemeinde ) and deregister.

I'm also leaving "Swiss" and I oddly find myself oddly in a huge "KMA" mood. It feels quite good. I can't even be bothered to say "Grüezi" anymore.

I hope you won't leave the forum also. I quite enjoyed your posts, and I am sorry we never met in person at an event.

Good luck with the move!
