Sorry Karl - not even close.

(See the other million or so posts on the subject - or ask any Tollhouse cookie loving American. )

But the point of the post was not brown sugar, or the lack thereof, at all - the point is simply that trivial annoyances, things that normally would not even register on our frustration scales, can act as triggers opening the floodgates.

And then we have to acknowledge the real frustrations, and learn how to deal with them. It's part of the adjustment cycle. It was only after the floodgates opened that I took off the rose colored glasses, admitted to myself that there were indeed important issues that I had to address, that I truly started to find my feet in Switzerland.

No, in the grand scheme of things brown sugar is not important. But I can tell you this: both trivial annoyances and life-shattering challenges are better faced with a plate of Tollhouse cookies.
Look, I am no cookie baker, that's the definition of brown sugar that I grew up with, literally sugar that is brown.

I think I found what you are looking for at the online Britshop, see http://www.britshop.ch/category_Sugar_and_Icing_38.html where you can order it online.

Re: what makes you stay in Switzerland?

Heh, yep, that's the right sugar (dark (or light) soft brown sugar -- not sold by retail shops in CH).

But let's get back on topic, or at least not focus on this micro-topic ...

Just mix 200gr household sugar with 1 tablespoon of molasses and you get a workable soft brown sugar

And that's the end of the micro-topic discussion.

So, what makes you stay in Switzerland?

Ireland will bounce back very soon and none of the above will be valid
Sorry Danny, I disagree with you there.. things haven't bottomed out yet in Ireland and its going to get worse before it gets better. With all the scandals within the banking sector in Ireland, its image as a steady financial location and doorway to Europe has been seriously damaged, poor infrastructure which will get worse now the government has effectively stopped spending on it, add to that unrealistic issues with the public sector threatening strikes and looking for pay rises in one of the worse economic depressions in our history is making the country look utterly ridiculous..

Soon in Ireland will probably be 10 years or more

I love Ireland, I'm Irish to the core and would love to be able to continue living here, but its getting to the stage where enough is enough..

I see from people complaining about Switzerland and its fault, everywhere has faults, its when the cons of living somewhere far outweigh the pro's and thats what Ireland is at the moment

What I do see in Switzerland is economic stability, a government that can do its job and a country that can do things properly and efficiently.

That alone is worth its weight in gold. I can live without late night shopping, Sundays where everything is closed, people not being the friendliest but getting things done efficiently even if it costs a fee.

I.C

Re: what makes you stay in Switzerland?

hey there

i m in the exact same situation as you are. we moved here from Budapest com my boyfriend got a job here. we re here since June but i haven t managed to find anything yet. manpower said they could not help even with 2 degrees cos i don t speak german. i would really need a job to be able to pay for language course so it s a vicious circle.
when did u come here? where are you looking for jobs?
i sometimes think i m the only person who has this problem but i had to realize it s quite common around here. it s abig dilemma to decide weather to try more here or go back home, i m not sure how long i can wait but at the same time i could see myself living here happily if i got and job and would get to know some nice people.. :-)
cheers, Laci

I really think people underestimate the handicap they have when they don't speak the local language on the job market. Speaking perfect German and good English is always better than vice versa. There aren't that many positions with English only compared to the total number of jobs available, so you really limit yourself there to a few companies.

I agree completely. I cannot think of any job in Australia or the UK that involves speaking that does not require English. Only jobs that go to non-English speaking people are cleaning jobs and alike. I am sure there are exceptions but these are a rarity.

In my previous job in the Netherlands, everyone could speak English and all documentation and systems were in English or both English and Dutch however, I still felt isolated as I could not speak fluent Dutch and it made it harder to build relationships, you missed out on office banter, understanding people at lunches and things were dumbed down for you.

In my role here, it's the same however there are several other non-Swiss Germans and lots of Germans so it's more international and the lingua franca is English. I was extremely cautious about accepting this role but fortunately, it appears to be turning out OK. Still, I'm learning German despite the other Anglophones telling me there's no point..

Yeah forget manpower, they're a bunch of crooks. As a matter of fact I dislike all those job agencies. I believe the best method to finding a job is connections. I believe that many people in this forum are or have been employed because of somebody the knew. All I can say, keep your head up, be patient and don't give up. Eventually a job offer will come thru.

Re: what makes you stay in Switzerland?

Manpower is actually the best and most professional of them all in my experience. They will tell you upfront about your chances to get a job, as has been done with you. Joker Personal in Zürich is quite good and professional too, avoid Kelly Services unless you need a students/temporary job.
