| | | Deregistering in Canton ZH. Advice?
I have dual citizenship. Swiss and the other one is not Swiss or EU. I am leaving Europe.
Just go to Gemeinde and say see you later? I want to know if there are going to be any surprises. I am going there tomorrow.
thanks

The laws have changed. You are pemitted to take tin foil out of ZH, now.
Where are you going? I'm just wondering where would be safe enough.

I deregistered yesterday at Kreisbüro 2 as I am moving to Geneva. You should take your meldebestätigung (the document that has a seal on it) with you as you have to give this in. I took my Ausländerausweis with me as well.
I did the whole thing in my not so great German. That's it. I took all of 5 minutes.

@ OP: Just take your ausländerausweis (if you have one) with and it takes 5 minutes.

Interestingly, your sarcastic comment applies far more accurately to the OP than to me.

I was only pointing out that as a mod you should try set an example and keep threads on topic. Or is that not something mods do? | Quote: | | | | | The laws have changed. I actually don't see any opinion at all... All I see is someone trying to bait someone else... Btw did Zurcher actually mention anything about safety or lack of it?
Zurcher; How long have you been in Zurich? The reason I ask is; for your tax. If you are on PAYE, then it is an easy process. However, if you are on the yearly system, you will have to settle your tax bill then and there.

The gemeinde's priority is tax, so if thats ok, all other stuff is quick.

My experience, August 2010, Kanton Zurich, Dual Swiss Citizen...
I deregistered two months ago from Zurich and found it a bit painful with the dual Swiss nationality and resulting tax drama! It took me around an hour, and there were two different offices to visit.
Go: To the Stadt House.
Take: As much as possible, the end result is the Abmeldung paper so you can continue the process of leaving. What I can remember: Passport, Payslips, Tax documents from the previous year, bank statements, proof of residence (Schriftenempfangschein from your Gemeinde), and anything else tax related they might be interested in, and organize someone who can sort any tax related stuff in your absence, and/or forward resulting mail as they won't deal with anyone out of Europe.
They will try to calculate the tax you owe right then and there. I ended up having to do my own tax form afterwards, sending it in, and am waiting for the final bill. This will not be sent out of Europe, so I've organized someone to receive and send it to me. Some of the staff spoke English, others did not, so be prepared, but they all tried to be helpful.
Anyway everyone's experience with Swiss bureaucracy is different depending on the weather, so hopefully other people experiences in the same situation will be efficient!

And usually won't allow you to abmelden before that. And if you "jump ship" so to speak, then I hope you aren't planning to come back to Switz, because then you will have an outstanding tax debt... And as you are going to abmelden, they do know you are here.

Its in your interests to sort out your tax before you leave, otherwise it will incur all sorts of extra charges in your absence. Also, you need your Abmeldung to get out of any outstanding contacts such as health insurance, cellphone etc. Your Abmeldung is proof you have officially left Switzerland on a certain day, its important and better than trying to argue the fact that you actually did!

!! Clarification on my above post, if you are in Zurich Stadt go to the Stadt House to deregister (I'm not sure about the rest of Kanton Zurich). Anyway it doesn't hurt to start the process at the Gemeinder, you might just be sent somewhere else...
