| | | Help, Luggage is overweight for the planes these days!
Hello,
Moving back to Canada soon and guess what? I have WAY more stuff today then I did 3 years ago when I came over. Now with all the new airline luggage restrictions, I can only bring one piece back trans-atlantic. Unless anyone knows of any airlines that still allow 2 pieces?
Also, is it super $$$ to send extra luggage by post in boxes or something?
Thanks! |

I think shipping it will be the cheapest solution, but expect for it to take about 8 weeks (give or take a few).
Personally, I'd ring the airline directly and enquire about what solutions they have to offer.
They may have a cargo opperation that can fly your extra baggage in tandem and there will be no delay........ there will be a price though.

If you happen to have any airline miles I would suggest to upgrade to business class and then you get 3 bags weighing 32kg so that should be plenty.
There are also a ton of threads on ways to ship luggage with links to companies etc

To the OP: There are many options and typically it gets more expensive the more kg/volume you have and the faster you want it to ship. Given the huge amount of stuff I'd have to move, I would go for a container(-part) on a ship. Air freight is far more expensive, but if you do not have that much stuff it might be an option.

BA allows checking one bag, one carry-on. There is a size restriction but no weight restriction on the carry-on per their website. You just need to be able to hoist it up in the rack yourself. This could be helpful if you have a lot of books or something. Also, they have a pretty fair price on a second checked bag.
Swiss allows two checked bags 23kg each for transatlantic flights to US/Canada.

I think continental allows two still as well. Also, try checking all the websites, that way you can get a good idea about which airlines charges the least for extra bags. Some of the charges aren't that bad as long as the extra bags aren't overweight! I HATE flying. Every time I do, it feels more and more like a cattle cart! |

I should manage to get it all into 3 luggages...but i am sure no airlines will allow more than 2 checked even with the extra charge if they only allow one piece. I will just have to go through everyone's websites and see who has the 2 piece allowance and perhaps wear all my clothes on the plane!

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago. The cheapest solution was using the Swiss post.

Maybe you can try to fly with Singapore Airline, call them and tell them your situation. As far as I know, they dont have any restriction on no. of checked-in bags. We arrived in Zurich on 11th Oct with 6 pieces of checked-in bags of total 80kgs (70kgs - and 10kg was luck that the flight was not full so the counter staff helped!). Goodluck :-)

I just had this happen to me, it is MUCH more expensive to ship things than to take them on the plane with you. Most airlines charge 50 bucks for each bag of 50 lbs. So it works out to a dollar a pound, have a look at international shipping rates and there is nothing even close to this. I found that the USPS will ship a 10 lb package for about 25 dollars, so my advice is to find some suitcases and take it on the plane with you.

When I moved from the States to Germany three years ago, I had three pieces of luggage, one was a few pounds over the limit, the two others just under. I had called United Airlines ahead of time and they said they would accept extra pieces of luggage at a charge.
Try that.
When my friends dropped me of at the counter and I checked in the guy told me I'd have to pay for the extra luggage/the extra weight on the one suitcase. I started bawling - due to the fact that my friends were standing behind me and I was upset to be leaving. The poor guy at the counter said he did not mean to upset me and "so sorry ma'am", and i will not charge you.
So call the airline and see if you can pay extra to take an extra piece. I don't remember how much it was, but it was cheaper than shipping it. And in the end you may not need to pay at all if you are upset when leaving
good luck

As far i know with most Airline you have to pre book your overweigt, surfboard or whatever with the ticket purchase. Some offer a service to transport your overweigt, some charge more than you would send it by airmail.

Of course they have restrictions, all airlines do, some maybe more flexible than other though.

If I remember correctly, you can ship an extra 23-Kilo bag in Swiss for 150 euros, or pay for excess up to 32 Kg for 50 euros.

If you don't have furniture to ship, Swiss Post is the best. Less than 200 CHF for 20 kg and I was told to it takes between 3-4 weeks for economy. They have all the info on their website.

We flew cheap seats with BA and it was £28 for an extra 23kg bag ( i think £35 if you don't pre book) on Air france it was about £45 in advance. My husband was on a higher tier than me for Air france and he gets 2 bags free!!
