When are you moving back? We also expect to move back to Aus in the not-so-distant future. We don't want to ship much back so maybe we can share a shipping container?

PM me if you're interested.

Re: International movers - help please?

I've just done this from Zurich to Sydney, unfortunately I wouldn't use the same company again so no recommendation.

Just some advice for anyone going through this, Australian customs are very particular. Put all your wooden stuff, shoes, beads, and anything they will want to check in the same boxes. We had a customs inspection which you pay for by the hour, and were able to be present to answer questions and speed up the process. Anything they don't like, you will have to pay to either get it treated (at least $200-$300, and could be damaged in the process), otherwise we had to get a wooden item destroyed for $80.

Wash bottoms of shoes, clean/dust any items from countries they will be particular about, or have a receipt to show that the item has been in Switzerland a while. And have a very good packing list!

Oooh we're moving to Sydney too at the end of the month. We're using Schneider - the guy's been very helpful so far. Anybody got anything else useful I need to know before I set off? I've never moved long haul before so the whole container concept is hugely alien to me!

Re: International movers - help please?

Everyone moving too Sydney. Jeeez.

I'm sitting here looking at the rain on the window, reminiscing about Darling Harbour, Manley, the blue mountains. The wombats in Woolongong Zoo.

Evenings drinking cool VBs on the Veranda watching the sun set and BBQing in shorts at sunrise among the rainbow lauraqueets covered treetops. Driving to the next BYO via the drive though to pick up some ice cold tinnies and a nice bottle of Hardy's.

Playing pool and having lunch in the RSL. Heading down town to the Rocks for some live music.

Makes me SICK... with envy.

Good luck with the move nevertheless.

We had a friend who brought some wooden music instrument (shaker) and it was destroyed by the custom officer because they wanted to open it up to see what is inside by drilling a hole in it. Of course it did not work again afterwards.

Sharing with someone you know is much better than with someone you don't. We had a container paid for by my husband's employers but were only shipping under half a container. The moving company charged my husband's employers for the whole container, but they had sold off the other half to another customer. I found out about it and reported it to the my husband's employers. The problem with having two sharing is that with two sets of paperwork and customs it takes longer to get to you. I imagine if you know the other person you can co-ordinate better.

Swiss customs have made holes in a painting we had and dented the weights of a grandfather clock trying to open them. This was only stuff that was posted- the rest has been no problem.
