Sticky gum remover

When we moved to Switzerland we bought our furniture from Australia. Some of the sticky labels that were applied to the furniture have left a sticky gum residue. I have been searching for a product to remove this from my wooden furniture. I used a product called 'Mr Orange' at home which was like a light oil. Has any one come accross a product that might help?

Re: Sticky gum remover

Try a 'de-nat' alcohol such as Ethenol (white spirit), in a diluted water solution. Should come off in a lick.

Also lighter fluid destroys glue, but be careful how you use it!

No, I mean Ethel Knoll:

Just pull a few fingers off and dilute in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes...

Ok, smartypants, I meant Ethanol...

Thanks Uncle Max,
Is this something I buy at a hardware shop or a chemist?

Re: Sticky gum remover

Drogeries / Chemists will probably stock the stuff. Or if you have some cheap old booze lying around, try that. Gets a bit sticky, but that's just sugar, not glue

Re: Sticky gum remover

You can find it easily at Co-op, right next to the other household cleanning products. They sell alcohol for cleanning - it is diluted (45o) and has some sort of detergent as well. Don't be scared by the blue color: it is just and additive to prevent people from drinking it.
By the way, of you want to really precise, the most correct name for alcohol is ethyl alcohol

"Brennspirit" at your local Migros, Coop or Denner. Usually in a dark green plastic bottle. A lite is about chf3 or so. I think this is the same as Wikipedia reference-linkMethylated spirit.

Also popular is Wikipedia reference-linkEucalyptus oil, which is a nice touch considering the origin of the furniture

Ask in a pharmacy for 'Wundbenzin' I always use this for removing sticker residues as well as the black marks left when u had a band-aid stuck on .
Careful a little on a cotton bud will go a long way and always check on an invisible spot that i iwll not take of the piant/varnish etc from the furniture also applied on some plastics i can leave smears, so better safe than sorry and try it out forst.
Another sticker residue remover is nail varnish remover, works especially well on metal surfaces, but again check first!!

Re: Sticky gum remover

I'd say WD-40 would do the same job. Coupled with a lighter, it could also do an insurance job
