If you have children why not let them lose in the garden and let them collect worms for you my kids love bringing me all sorts of things from the garden including worms. The kids will have fun and you get free worms
Because you should NOT use Garden worms.

Re: Food waste

Newspaper is best becuase it has NOT been bleached and avoid Colour / Glossy print.

Should not be TOXIC to the worms basically.

I have a Can-O-Worms. I bring it into the Garage over the winter, was a Solid Block when I brought it at the end of last year, but the worms survived. Had this sent over form the UK.

Do get Fruit flies, but guess I need to add more bedding.

Came across this link from the Zürich Entsorgungs page - it's in German, but is a nice guide to getting started composting and troubleshooting your compost issues.

Re: Food waste

Thought I'd post in this thread since it is along the lines of the info I'm looking for.

When I moved into my WG in April there were two bins under the sink, a garbage and a green bin. In Nova Scotia, Canada, we used this green bin for collecting our food waste (awesome waste diversion, anything and everything goes in and then the province sells the soil back to folks for cheap) for compost. My roomate had never considard using it, but I was and continue to be keen and I'm finally getting around to thinking more about it. In Canada it was picked up bi-weekly. Here obviously that doesn't happen and it appears that around where I live (near Triemli in Zurich) there are large green bins outside, but they are limited to only garden waste and lawn clippings. I've finally found someone who has a composter in their yard who would be happy for me to dump my collections in their compost.

My question, is there any sort of liners (probably made of karton) that I can use to line the bin or should I just go ahead and fill it and then clean it out after each removal? Thoughts? Tips?

Toilet? Obviously not after the prescribed time!
That's a bad idea, you could be feeding the rats.

The careless and unnecessary waste of water is more my concern with that comment...

I'd like to know what you have to do with the little green bins in the kitchen for food too. Are you supposed to line them with something? And then throw them in the large green bins on the street? Otherwise, should I just throw the remnants into our garden?

Would like to throw our fruit and veg skins into that rather than the zurisacks and do the right thing at the same time.
