Buying a second hand bike in Basel?

Hi all, I was wondering if you knew of anywhere where I could buy a second hand bike in Basel? Sick of buses & trams! Also, apparently you have to buy a permit for them....but I have no idea from where and the details, so if someone could describe this for me, that would be great! Cheers!

Re: Buying a second hand bike in Basel?

Hi,

You can try for the second hand items in Basel flea market, which happens once a week..usually on saturday or sunday.

One is at Petersplatz,
Petersplatz flea market
every Saturday, 7.30 am to 4.00 pm

There is also a Sunday market in the Erlenmatt (4058 Basel)
One of my friend got a good second had bike from there.

Provided a good luck, you can also find one with a good price.

Re: Buying a second hand bike in Basel?

You can try the flea market, but you're likely to be buying a bike near the end of it's life.
A better/safer bet is get one second hand from a bike shop, (I got a good one for CHF250 ) or buy one from a supermarket like Jumbo in Allschwil:
http://www.jumbo.ch/die_schaerfsten_...og_201112.html
or Migros : http://www.sportxx.ch/g3.cms/s_page/...s_level/827990

Also there are some reasonably priced bikes at the Velo Markt (?) behind the big church in Barfusserplatz.

You also need a Velo Vignette, available from any Die Post, and also Aldi and other places.
Between CHF4 and CHF6 depending where you get it.

Re: Buying a second hand bike in Basel?

Hey Irishgirl

There is another Bikemarket coming up at the end of june, organised by those people:
http://www.velomaerkte.ch/bike_basel.php
(There is a button for the english website in the header)

They do bikeselling days about 2 or 3 times a year in Zurich and Basel but they have a location at Barfüsserplatz where you can go and look at bikes.
They do sell a lot of brand new bikes from last season, so cheaper than from the new collection but (i think) still really expensive.
BUT they also sell lots of used bikes too. I bought one bike there, but it broke after some years... i might buy another one this summer aswell....

You need a "Velovignette" its an insurance that u must purchase for cycling on the streets. (Little Kids Bikes don't need it)
You can buy these in shops like Migros and Coop from march to may everywhere, now maybe at the "kundenservice". Also sportshops carry them, oh, and the post offices. I guess "Velomaerkte"(link above) sells it too.

The Velovignette itself is a sticker that u put on the bike each year around spring (i think the you NEED the new one May 1st) the other part is a form that u fill out and keep in case of a robbery....
this is how they look like

Re: Buying a second hand bike in Basel?

to be honest the velmarkt is not a bargain at all, basic bikes for silly expensive prices......

look in germany for decent bikes and decent prices..

Re: Buying a second hand bike in Basel?

I went there today. First, you don't need the sticker anymore - they took that away a few years ago. However, there is some kind of insurance people have here in case of accidents, and apparently you are supposed to get that. I think it's cheap, like 5CHF per month, but I don't know anything else about it.

Secondly, they do NOT sell used bikes, even though their website says it has 'secondhand' bikes. They sell ONLY 'outlet' bikes. They are all new, at 'reduced' prices. I went for a bike for my ten year old, and the bike they had was about 350 CHF. (It was on sale even.) They claim that their bikes are the same price as used bikes at a bike store; and they offer some kind of guarantee and repair thing with them. I have not checked bike stores yet to see about used bikes there.

I wanted a simple bike for my kid, not a fancy, expensive bike. Apparently, those are hard to come by in Basel. However, at the end of many conversations with the Tourism Office and several friends, I found out that there is a large Migros in Dreispitz that has cheaper bikes. You can also go to Rhein Center right across the border in Germany; apparently, bikes are cheaper there as well.

Re: Buying a second hand bike in Basel?

the insurance you are talking about it the normal personal liability insurance, if you crash in a car it can pay for that (but people that find their car crashed by a biker without money and insurance lose thousands of francs in repairs and depreciation and have a hard time getting anything back).

The velo markt or whatever it is called is no longer a cheap place to buy bikes. Last time I was there I saw nothing below 1,000 CHF.

And no, you're not "supposed" to have it - it may be included in some household insurance policies, but it's entirely optional.
