Finding someone who may have been admitted to hospital. Urgent.

Sorry to double post this but nobody seems to be browsing the relevant forum.

I need to check if a friend has been taken into a hospital in Zurich last night and if yes, which one. What number should I call?

Re: Finding someone. Urgent.

I think you might have to just phone the hospitals directly. If you call the main switchboard they probably can look on their system to see if the person has been checked in.

Alternatively, is there anyone who is close to the person who would know if they have gone to the hospital, and if so, which one ?

Can you start calling all of them with an AandE department? Could be quicker than waiting for an answer, numbers will be searchable on google.

Agree, phone each of the relevant hospitals in Zurich directly.

I did this once in another Canton, and had an answer in a couple of minutes.

I hope you got the information you needed and that all is well.

Just for future reference:

Re-double posting. One of the threads/posts will nearly always get deleted as it is annoying for members to find, after giving an answer, that the question has also been answered two minutes earlier in another section of the forum.
Important consideration if you don't get instant answers to your 'urgent' request is to look at the rest of your title. 'Urgent' alone doesn't cut much ice on here as it is used too often for 'minor' things.
'Looking for someone' may well mean that a member (often a newcomer) has a long-lost friend or relative in Switzerland and would like someone here to do a bit of research for them. You will not get the 'right' people looking at your post. Although long titles are often 'too long to be read', in this sort of case I would recommend giving a bit more detail.

As I said before, I hope that nothing too serious has happened.

No luck at all. How long does someone have to be gone to be officially "missing" and worth speaking to the police about?

I've contacted all the hospitals and friends that I can with no luck at all. Tried calling her as well but the phone rings and rings until going to voicemail. no responses to texts either. Other friends have also tried. We're all worried.

Do you know her next of kin ? They would have been contacted if needed. Do you know her ICE number that may be in her mobile ?

What about her address...have you called in ?

Take all your friends and go to the Gemeinde / City police and make a statement?

Maybe she wants some peace and quiet?

Re: Finding someone who may have been admitted to hospital. Urgent.

Excluding the police - plus other authorized agencies if applicable - why would any hospital or other such establishment give out this information to anyone other than next of kin and / or named contact(s) on their admissions form?

To show some compassion to anxious friends?

Granted. However, what about protecting someone from AN Other who may not exactly have their best interests at heart?...

Re: Finding someone who may have been admitted to hospital. Urgent.

I don't know about your relationship and why you might think she has been admitted to hospital, but her family should have been informed by the hospital (if possible). Do you know her family?

Why not phone the police directly and ask what you can do (and tell why you'd think she may have been admitted to hospital)? If she is working (mo-fr) and you can wait until tomorrow morning, ask there.

To tell the police about a missing person you have to go there in person, show them how you tried to find her through friends/relatives and make sure you can give them as much information as possible.

I hope it is not needed but the attached checklist (in german) tells you what info the police is looking for a "vermisstmeldung"...her data (name, date of birth, address, photo etc.), body features (+particular things like scars..), language, does she need medicine, what was she wearing...

I hope it's nothing serious and she is well.

edit: the attachement isn't there so here is the link..http://www.bern.ch/leben_in_bern/per...te/angehoerige
The checklist is on the right side below "Downloads"
But I'd first ask the police if you should contact the family or not and about the procedure in general..
+try to stay calm, especially if you do contact her family!

Of course, but it's a question of finding the right balance. I'd have thought the number of anxious friends/relatives calling hospitals late on a Saturday night would greatly outweigh those trying to gain some advantage. (If you could actually benefit by knowing that someone was in hospital...)

Your are correct the hospital will not release any details in Switzerland.

Re: Finding someone who may have been admitted to hospital. Urgent.

I don't know what the situation is here...

But when I was in (psychiatric) hospital and a doctor rang up asking for details about me (long story, but they didn't have any right to do that is the short version), my psychiatrist and a nurse asked me if I knew why this person was calling and what I wanted them to say.

It didn't help my recovery. I got very anxious and worried and it took a long time to sort out.

I appreciate that you want to know if your friend is ok. But, as other people have said, I don't think the hospital will tell you, and (if your friend IS in hospital and is incommunicado because she doesn't want, for whatever reason, to communicate), it might cause her additional distress.

I'm afraid I can't give you any advice on reporting her missing, but if you're still concerned and you haven't had news, I think that's a better solution than ringing up all the hospitals and asking if she's there.

I hope that doesn't sound unsympathetic. I'm sure you're a great friend to be so concerned about her.
