Hi,

Im looking for a mini torch /soldering iron with butane but google search brings up alot of stuff from Germany. Way cheaper too but im worried ill be dinged big customs fees again for the 3rd time. It amazes me that torch set at conrad electronics Germany is 39 Euros (48SFR) but if you search the same set conrad swiss, its 79 Francs!!!!!

Same for anything else ive found. Its a fraction of the cost elsewhere. UK for example but these stupid customs fees are annoying and you never know how badly youll get screwed.

So any local places that are of reasonable cost for this kind of stuff?

Try Conrad for electrical geekery, Switzerland's Tandy, Maplins or Radio Shack. They have brick stores too.

Same product with shipping converted funds plus shppping is still cheaper, but figured the customs will nail me again.

Some electrical items can actually be cheaper here, think it depends on a number of things.

And if you are in Zurich the #1 Geek store is Pusterla. If something starts with 1N, 74, has Ohm's, Henry's, or Farad you will find it there. (Also #1 excuse why you are in the red light district / Langstrasse area at broad daylight)

here's a great tip for you: Hornbach - it's a brilliant, huge hardware/DIY store. I love it and go there regularly.

best part: they will give you 10% off any swiss website's price

example: hornbach sells a Bosch drill for 500chf. Some topppreise website sells it's for 400chf. The site must be a swiss website. You print out the offering, go to hornbach, where you pay 400chf - 10% = 360chf.

I've done this with numerous items and ended up paying over 50% less the catalogue price for my washing machine, freezer and tumble drier.

Wow that is a great tip. But im not very mobile right now and i dont have a car. Do they have a website and do they honor it online?

No website offerings, you have to go there. I recommend doing research first, then getting a mobility or some cheap rental for a day. Really worth it. Hornbach is a paradise. The only thing i hate about this place is i always end up getting out of control there and buying cool gadgets and stuff i don't need.
