Recycling clothes, shoes and textile/fabric

Hi... was just wondering if anyone knew of any charities or places where one can donate old clothes/sheets/towels? Does something like that even exist in Zurich? I know poverty is at a different level all together in my country (India) but regardless, I feel awful when my husband tells me to just throw things in the bin, cuz they may not fit/appeal to us etc anymore...

Re: Donations??

there are collection points for clothes plus a couple of times a year, they will drop off bags for you to put clothes into.

Re: Donations??

next time you can drop the bags on the street is in second half of october, so i guess you'll have the bag in your mailbox somewhen in the end of september or beginning of october.

the date when they'll collect the bags on the street will be printed on the bag.

Re: Donations??

depends from Kanton to Kanton. There is a thread started by Gooner about glass recycling with a link to the Sammelstellen in Zurich. The textile points are yellow in colour, I think.

Put your address in and check Kleider/Schuhe

Hi Arena,

Apart from the collection days, there are also containers where you can take textiles at any time. You can find out more info at www.texaid.ch

Use this link to find your nearest container: http://www.texaid.ch/301.0.html

=DM=
PS The english version of the texaid site has much less info that the German version

Just a further clarification on these containers - they are everywhere, but you are expected to pack everything into a bag first. I was caught by this the first time I went to dump clothes in it, so I went home and packed everything in a bag first (any bag will do). Unlike the bottle containers you can use them anytime you like

it's also worth mentioning that they don't appreciate torn and worn-out clothing IIRC

Re: Recycling clothes, shoes and textile/fabric

Hi,

I just got one of those Texaid.ch bags and have been trying to translate the text on the outside word for word, but it is a royal pain. I am wondering if anyone could clarify for me what I can and cannot put in it?

Based on what I have read and translated - I THINK - that they are only looking for shoes (tied together in pairs), clothes, bed linens, towels, blankets, furs, pillows, belts, bags, underwear and socks - As long as they are in good clean and wearable condition. Is that correct?

What confuses me is that their website also talks about recycling the fibre of the other stuff - so I am not sure if they want it in the bag or not!

Recycling in Switzerland is quite a complicated ordeal!

If Texaid does not want the less than perfect stuff, is there somewhere else to recycle fabrics?

Thanks for any info/clarification.

Jose

Hi Jose,
What DM said was super helpul and this is what I always do now.. Its the easiest and most convenient option. You can put all your fabrics in... don't worry about the German so much. You can always play dumb and get away with it... a confused, helpless look with a smile gets you lots places here!

Good luck

If you have fabric, please please send it to me!! I'm a fabric addict... It's sort of like a charity!

I have a non-used silk/cotton throw, in a neutral color. It's boxed up in my hobby room doing nothing. I think it's a shame it's not being used. Please PM me if your interested.

Re: Recycling clothes, shoes and textile/fabric

Hi everyone! The search feature (for locating the nearest drop box) on the Text Aid website does not work for me. I'm in Zurich 8050 but get no results...tried plugging in other towns and such and get nothing. Is this search feature messed up or am I doing something wrong? I'm a little anxious because we are moving soon and need to leave behind roughly half of our clothes. If anyone knows of things in the Oerlikon area, or around Milchbuck/Irchel/Schwamendingen/Waldgarten, please do tell.

Thanks!

Re: Recycling clothes, shoes and textile/fabric

hi Rachel and Hari, there is a container at the Langmauerstrasse tram stop, which is just around the corner from Milchbuck. It's alongside the other recycling containers, facing the church.
