Ordering seeds/plants online

I am trying to get into doing some container gardening on my balcony, and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with ordering seeds online. I have visited some sites recommended by gardening sites and they are mostly US-based. Would I be able to order seeds from outside Switzerland or would there be trouble bringing them in here? If I can't order them from a US based site, does anyone know of any good sites based more locally that I could order from? Thanks!

Re: Ordering seeds/plants online

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but you have seen the large display of seeds in your local garden centre I assume?
You don't say what it is you want to grow and, yes, I suppose if you are planting a very large area, you might want to order online, in which case I have no idea about sites since I've never ordered this way.
All I can say is that, seeds don't cost much, you end up with far too many little plants from one pack, and then you have to play god, deciding which of them live, and which get composted.

Ha ha yes I have seen the seed displays and they are quite nice! I am sure I will likely be able to get everything I want there, but this is just in case there is anything I can't find at the store or shops around town. I just figured the info would be handy to know in case I need it in the future

I had a few packets of seeds and bulbs sent to me for my birthday from UK. They got through customs OK i.e without being opened, but maybe you wont be so lucky if you are planning on ordering a lot. Also it was marked as a 'gift' so probably why they didn't touch it.
Had a quick look on Google and came across this website in CH...not sure if it's of any use to you, they seem to sell seeds? Good Luck!

Hi,
You can not import "everything your want", but everything you want that is allowed...

http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_pri...gpKfo&typ=.pdf

http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_pri...x.html?lang=fr
Look on the french page (google translate it but dont change language on the site, the link will disappear) and look for "importation de plante).

Careful with the term "gift" in German it means "poison" although they can probably guess from a English speaking country you only need one retard in the post office to take your parcel to bits.

Les Norman has no particular reputation at present
Re: Ordering seeds/plants online

Seeds are okay being imported, green plants are not.
I can recommend quite a few English sites, depending whether you are looking for specialist herbs, veg or flowers... Mr Fothergill's is excellent.. But there about 12 excellent places...

If you plant seeds now it will be too late! You need to plant them indoors in March, and put them on the balcony in May.

Now I see what has happened A newby in USA posted a spam about plants, and I followed on. Then I asked for the newby to be OTBC. This has messed up the thread (Which started too late in July any way)

Sorry...

Re: Ordering seeds/plants online

Thinking about ordering some items from them - has anyone lately had experience with their delivery? I'd need delivery to my flat, not just the front door.
Also, how small/"full" are their pots - how quickly does one have to repot the plants?

Thanks.

Their deliveries are via Swisspost so if your postman brings parcel deliveries to your door rather than the front door you will be fine.

As for how gull their pots are and how quickly they need repotting depends on the type of plant you order. I've inky ordered garden plants and have planted them directly into to ground so I can't really help on that one.

Placed my order - will ask our postie to bring stuff to my door for me, he's a kind fellow and will probably do it.
Now all I need is pots and gallons of rainwater - buckets outside waiting for the next storm.

Also bought some herb seeds - hope that simply popping them into soil, placing the pot outside and hoping for the best won't kill the herbs.
