what are you sleeping on?

After ages of bumping into, and elbowing each other during the night (insert your own joke here), the missus and I have decided that a new bed is in order. At the moment we have a double which I think was originally from Ikea, and the matresses aren't particularly brilliant. Its time for something significantly bigger and more comfy.

I'd imagine the forumers much have bought thousands of beds between them in Switzerland - so my question is:

what kind of bed/matress do you have?
where did you buy it?
how much did it cost?
how are you finding it to sleep on?

We slept in a bed with a latex matress when we were away one weekend - and I quite liked it, so we'll defiantely try a few of these out.

Any tips very much appreciated.....

Re: what are you sleeping on?

We bought our bedroom furniture and mattress @ Diga. We bought one of the most expensive soft mattresses 180 x 200 size is about 3000 francs Elastoflex Climatica. It was supposed to be one of the newest models. We love it although nothing compares to my California King in the U.S. I hear Ikea also has good ones though

Re: what are you sleeping on?

I bought my bed from Ikea (180 X 220) it was around 500CHF. We also bought the matresses there but I can't remember the price we paid (it was the cheapest latex one) and it is the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in.

Thanks mate - it seems like spending a couple of grand on a decent mattress, and then just getting ourselves a bigger bed similar to what we have - might be the way for us to go.

My partner's choice not mine. He does not like Ikea quality too much being as he is Swiss. He'll buy a few closets or bookshelves for storage there but that is about it. I did not pay, I only gasped when I saw the price.

Re: what are you sleeping on?

Its a funny one really - many of us would happily pay a fortune for a TV that we might watch for a few hours a night, but think its ludicrous to spend a similar amount on a mattress that you're going to spend 8 hours a night on, and affects your quality of life.

Re: what are you sleeping on?

... and nobody has mentioned waterbeds! I love them. Good for your back. You can heat them to the temperature you want. They mould themselves to your body shape. You can get dual-system beds so if you like to sleep at a colder temperature than your partner, you can each select which temperature you like. They are also hygenic - no bed mites.

They are expensive, but they last, they never sag, and they are supremely comfortable.

I do not sell them!

kfc.

PS, and I'm not into kinky sex despite their reputation (or mine)!

Re: what are you sleeping on?

We spent a lot of money on a silentnight mattress..the one with the duck and the hippo in the advert, the hippo can bounce around all he likes and the duck never notices.

It was only then that I appreciated the benefits of a great mattress....
make your own mind up which one of me and the misses rates as the hippo.

Edit: these guys http://www.silentnight.co.uk/

Re: what are you sleeping on?

We bought a Superba Prestige Forte Plus when we purchased our new bed from Victoria Möbel in Baar 2 years ago. It's also not all about the mattress, but the wooden slats under it. So worth the 4k

Re: what are you sleeping on?

We have a sultan lasalle (?spelling) from Ikea. I can't remember how expensive it was, but it is the best mattress I have ever slept on. The good thing about Ikea is the exchange policy. You can have them for up to two weeks and if you don't like it, take it back and change it for another. Another bonus is being two mattresses you can adjust the wooden slat things underneath according to how firm/rigid you want your bed to be.
Just a postscript, I don't know which poster made the comparison between telly and bed, but it is spot on

Re: what are you sleeping on?

we're in a worse predicament than you. One too many moves and our bed collapsed a few months ago in the middle of the night after my other half tossed and turned for the umpteenth time. (Talk about rudely awakened!) Now sleeping on mattress on slats on the floor. Partner fears mould though.

Will take some tips from you guys here. Thanks.

I am told that you should ask your landlord for permission to put a waterbed in. They are heavy when filled, so the landlord might insist on some kind of platform to distribute the weight.

Been There, Done That, with the el cheapo Ikea job I bought when I first came here. Never again will I skimp on a bed.

I find that a bit weird. All waterbeds come with a platform to distribute the weight and they weigh no more than a bath and so should be safe in any properly-constructed flat.

Re: what are you sleeping on?

Strongly recommend latex mattress, can't remember where we bought them and for how much, though.
Problem we are having now is: every bed other than our own seems REALLY uncomfortable!

Weird it might be, but that's what I was told, and why I mentioned it.

If you live in an older property, it's a question worth asking, even if only for insurance purposes.
